Helicopter Carrying Iran’s President Suffers Hard Landing, Biden Holds Emergency Meet

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi experienced a turbulent helicopter landing in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

The incident occurred in a misty, rural area near the city of Jolfa, close to the Azerbaijan border. Raisi was accompanied by Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials.

While details about the crash remain conflicting, rescue efforts were hindered by adverse weather conditions. State TV did not provide immediate updates on Raisi’s condition following the incident, but public figures urged prayers for his well-being.

Rescue teams faced challenges navigating the rugged, mountainous terrain due to heavy rain, fog, and wind. Despite difficulties, efforts were underway to reach the crash site and assess the situation. Raisi, a prominent figure in Iranian politics, was in the region to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

The visit marked a symbolic gesture amid strained relations between the two nations. Raisi’s leadership has been marked by controversial policies, including the enrichment of uranium and involvement in regional conflicts.

The U.S. State Department acknowledged the helicopter incident, stating they were monitoring the situation closely. US President Joe Biden on Sunday interrupted his vacation and returned to the White House for an emergency meeting.
