ICT sector in Egypt records growth rate of 15% despite COVID-19 Pandemic

Information and Communication Technology sector in Egypt recorded a growth rate of 15.2 per cent during the fiscal year of 2019/ 2020 despite the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the entire global.

This was disclosed by Talaat the ICT Miniter, who stated that the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in opportunities for people to learn extensively and work remotely. He pointed out that distance learning allowed the ministry to double the number of trainees, which is in line with its plan to increase the number of training institutes in the governorates.

This statement was made during the closing events of the training year 2019- 2020 organised by the Information Technology Institute (ITI) which was titled “Young Egyptian Minds”.

The Minister pointed out that the job opportunities in the traditional way of working will always be limited in terms of scope and the number of workers each employer can reach locally, hence the importance of working remotely through various online platforms has contributed in removing the barriers that limit employers- employees work relationship.

He further pointed out that the current global health crisis has also paved way for companies and management to change their work models thereby accepting the new normal which most countries have imbibed in the work culture as it provides them with the opportunity to employ talented and creatives minds who have diverse skills and expertise to take up several positions in their organisations.

There are many opportunities and training programs provided by the Ministry and its affiliates to improve the digital skills to youths in Egypt, the training institutes have also increased from 4,500 in 2018 to more than 100,000 in 2020.

The current trend by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology also provides self-employment skills to most independent professionals who have access to training courses and certification where the Egyptian youth have what it takes to compete and succeed in the global markets.
