Rwanda’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) has released the final list of presidential candidates for the upcoming election. The publication shows that only three candidates have been selected from the original group of hopefuls. The announcement, which was made on Tuesday, has increased excitement and established the foundation for a closely monitored election.
The three candidates who have qualified to run are:
- Paul Kagame – The incumbent president and leader of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), seeking to extend his long tenure in office.
- Victoire Ingabire – Leader of the opposition party, FDU-Inkingi, and a vocal advocate for democratic reforms and human rights.
- Frank Habineza – Head of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, known for his focus on environmental issues and social justice.
The NEC stated that the candidates were selected based on strict eligibility criteria, including legal compliance, comprehensive documentation, and sufficient support from the electorate.
“We conducted a rigorous and transparent vetting process to ensure that only the most qualified candidates stand for election,” said Charles Munyaneza, Executive Secretary of the NEC. “This election is crucial for our democracy, and we are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of integrity.”
The decision to retain only three candidates has sparked discussions about the inclusivity and competitiveness of the political process. Some disqualified aspirants have voiced concerns about the vetting procedures and the overall fairness of the election.
“This outcome raises serious questions about the inclusiveness of our democratic process,” said Diane Rwigara, a former presidential hopeful who did not make the final list. “It is vital that all voices are given a chance to be heard in a fair and open election.”
With the campaign period now officially underway, the three candidates will present their platforms and engage with voters across the country. President Kagame, in power since 2000, is campaigning on his track record of economic development and stability. In contrast, Ingabire and Habineza are emphasizing governance reforms, human rights, and environmental sustainability.
The election, scheduled for August 2024, is a pivotal moment for Rwanda, a country that has experienced substantial economic growth and social progress over the past two decades. However, issues related to political freedom and human rights continue to be central to national and international discourse.
International observers have been invited to monitor the election, reflecting Rwanda’s commitment to transparency and credibility. The NEC has reassured the public that all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
“We call on all Rwandans to engage actively and peacefully in the electoral process,” Munyaneza added. “This is an opportunity for citizens to shape the future of our nation through their votes.”
