Sanusi Lamido, the reinstated Emir of Kano, has officially received his appointment letter as the 16th Emir of Kano from Governor Abba Yusuf.
The ceremony took place at the Kano State Government House on Friday. During the event, the governor emphasized the Emir’s responsibilities and urged him to lead in accordance with Islamic principles.
He highlighted the Emir’s competence, credibility, and popularity as the basis for his second appointment. The governor encouraged him to promote unity and harmony among different Islamic sects in the state. The event was attended by traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other dignitaries, following Governor Yusuf’s signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law.
This new legislation replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019, which led to the division of the Kano Emirate into five separate entities in 2019, resulting in the removal of Sanusi II from his position.
Governor Yusuf described the 2019 actions as unjust and explained the process that led to the Emir’s reinstatement, expressing gratitude to the legislative body for swiftly passing the bill. He thanked the Speaker and members of the House for their commitment to upholding the rule of law and serving the welfare of the people. Sanusi II, formerly known as Lamido Sanusi, assumed the throne on June 8, 2014, during Rabiu Kwankwaso’s tenure as governor of Kano State.
The recent developments have culminated in the restoration of the historic Kano Emirate to its pre-2019 status, with the reinstated Emir Sanusi II at the helm.
