South Africa’s new Rise Mzansi party sees opportunities in tight election

The leader of Rise Mzansi stated that South Africa’s upcoming election, which is anticipated to be the most competitive since the country’s transition to democracy, presents an opportunity for his party to engage in innovative negotiations and enhance parliamentary oversight.

With indications pointing towards the African National Congress potentially losing its majority for the first time in 30 years in the May 29 election, smaller parties are being considered as potential coalition partners or influential players in the outcome.

Songezo Zibi, the founder of Rise Mzansi, expressed that achieving 5% of the vote would be a successful outcome for the party, translating to 20 seats in the national parliament. While not ruling out forming coalitions with other parties, Zibi emphasized that Rise Mzansi would not align with any party involved in corruption or suspected of corrupt practices.

He highlighted the possibility of influencing governance through alternative means beyond holding governmental positions, mentioning the potential for strategic negotiations in the election process.

Zibi also mentioned the party’s openness to collaborating with different parties or coalitions on specific issues to facilitate the passage of legislation in parliament. Describing Rise Mzansi’s approach as community-focused, Zibi noted its appeal to disillusioned young people and women seeking change from the current political landscape. The party’s objectives are centred on tangible, local initiatives such as ensuring access to clean water in every household and establishing well-equipped public health facilities within a 15-minute reach.
