UNESCO: World Failing to Provide Quality Education for Children

According to a report released by the United Nations on Monday, the world is failing to ensure that all children receive “inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities” by 2030.

Early childhood education attendance, drop-out rates, completion rates, gender gaps in completion rates, minimum proficiency rates in reading and mathematics, trained instructors, and public education investment were among the metrics used to measure a participating country’s success.

Countries were already failing their children, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, “even before taking into account the prospective repercussions of COVID-19 on education progress.”

According to UNESCO’s assessment, this failure “is a wake-up call for the world’s leaders,” since millions of children will continue to miss out on education and high-quality learning.

The education standards are part of Sustainable Development Goal 4, one of 17 objectives established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. The targets are expected to be met by 2030.
