The Foundation for a Better Environment (FABE) has trained over 30,000 students on environmental sustainability through its EcoSchoolsNG initiative, which started in 2016. The initiative aims to educate young Nigerians on the importance of preserving the environment and promoting sustainable practices.

The founder of FABE Foundation and convener of EcoSchoolsNG, Temitope Okunnu, shared this achievement at the project’s 2024 closing ceremony in Lagos. She explained that the initiative was created to give young people the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to become environmental leaders. According to her, the programme equips students with practical experience in climate action, conservation, waste-to-wealth solutions, and eco-friendly business models.

The project has received backing from several organizations, including the Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation, Access Bank, and Danone. It is also endorsed by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy.

During the event, Okunnu expressed gratitude for the support received, emphasizing that sustainability efforts require collective action. She urged participants to take bold steps in protecting the environment, stressing that climate change is a reality that affects everyone. According to her, EcoSchoolsNG has helped shape a new generation of green entrepreneurs, eco-conscious leaders, and climate advocates.

Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, praised the impact of the initiative. She noted that since its inception, the project has trained thousands of students, youths, and women, demonstrating the power of education in driving positive change. She commended the students for learning how to repurpose plastic waste, create compost from food scraps, and find innovative uses for discarded items like old tyres.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Gaji Tajudeen, represented by Bolaji Badru, also acknowledged the foundation’s contributions. He described the initiative as a groundbreaking project that has instilled eco-conscious values in students and teachers, setting the stage for a more sustainable future.

Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation’s Programme Manager, Abiodun Owo, highlighted the importance of the initiative’s approach to environmental education. He stated that the training would lead to a greener Nigeria, encouraging the planting of more trees and a shift from single-use plastics to reusable materials.

Okunnu concluded by urging all stakeholders to continue supporting sustainability efforts, stating that the success of EcoSchoolsNG proves that small actions can create lasting impacts. She encouraged students to remain committed to environmental protection, as their actions today will shape the future of Nigeria’s ecosystem.
