Beiersdorf, the German multinational behind NIVEA, has officially introduced its popular dermatological skincare brand, Eucerin, into the Nigerian market. The brand, known globally for its science-backed solutions, made its debut at a launch event held recently in Lagos.
With over 120 years of dermatological research behind it, Eucerin is specially formulated to treat various skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, acne, dry skin, and sun damage. The launch in Nigeria signals a major move by Beiersdorf to expand its presence in the country, while offering skincare solutions that are safe and suitable for African skin.
Speaking at the event, the Country Manager for Beiersdorf Nigeria, Mr. Oladele Adeyole, said the time had come for Nigerians to adopt healthier skincare habits, especially in the face of rising concerns about harmful bleaching products in the market. He referenced the 2021 warning from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which alerted the public to the dangers of unregulated bleaching creams.
“People often resort to bleaching as a cosmetic fix, but today, beauty has evolved into a health and moral issue,” Adeyole stated. He stressed the need for solutions that protect and enhance natural skin without causing harm.
Also present at the event was Mr. Mathieu Levasseur, General Manager for Central, East, and West Africa at Beiersdorf. He spoke on the company’s long-term relationship with Nigeria through its NIVEA brand and expressed pride in expanding the product portfolio with Eucerin. He noted that Beiersdorf is committed to skincare science and is focused on long-term impact rather than short-term trends.
Regional Medical Manager for Africa and the Middle East, Ms. Nathalie Gemayel, revealed during the event that Eucerin sells one product every two seconds around the world. She highlighted that the brand’s success is built on over 1,000 clinical studies carried out within six years. These studies have helped to fine-tune products that are effective and safe for all skin types, including African skin.
One of the key highlights of the launch was a keynote presentation by UK-based Consultant Dermatologist and Laser Specialist, Prof. Firas Al-Niaimi. He gave a scientific breakdown of how skin conditions like acne and hyperpigmentation not only affect physical appearance but also take a toll on emotional health. Prof. Al-Niaimi explained the risks of using hydroquinone-based products and instead endorsed Thiamidol, a patented ingredient used in Eucerin products. According to him, Thiamidol is safe, non-toxic, and maintains the skin’s natural pigmentation, making it a safer alternative even during pregnancy.
Four new Eucerin products were unveiled at the event:
- Even Pigment Perfector Dual Serum
- Even Pigment Perfector Day & Night Cream
- Dermopurifier Triple Effect Serum (for acne-prone skin)
- Sun protection range for oily, pigmented, and ageing skin
These products aim to provide Nigerians with targeted skincare solutions backed by real science and global testing.
The event also featured a panel discussion with top Nigerian dermatologists, including Prof. Ayesha Akinkugbe, Dr. Cynthia Ebie, and Dr. Omatighene Obaro. The experts confirmed the effectiveness of Thiamidol, noting it was the most powerful Tyrosinase inhibitor out of over 50,000 compounds tested. Tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for melanin production, which causes pigmentation issues when overactive.
The launch of Eucerin is not just a business expansion for Beiersdorf; it is also a statement about changing the skincare narrative in Nigeria. With increasing awareness about the health risks of unregulated creams, more Nigerians are now looking for safer and more effective skincare alternatives. Beiersdorf hopes that with Eucerin, Nigerians will embrace a healthier, more confident approach to skin care.
