Olam Agri Celebrates Africa Day with Cultural Display and Staff Unity

Leading agribusiness company, Olam Agri, has once again demonstrated its pride in African roots and commitment to workplace inclusion by celebrating this year’s Africa Day with colourful cultural activities across its office locations in Nigeria. The celebration brought together staff from different backgrounds in a lively display of tradition, unity, and pride.

Africa Day, which is marked every May, celebrates the continent’s diverse cultures, resilience, and growth potential. Olam Agri used the occasion to strengthen team bonding among staff, showcase African heritage, and promote a workplace that values diversity.

The event, led by Olam Agri’s Country Head, Mr. Anil Nair, saw staff members wearing traditional attire that represented various Nigerian ethnic groups including Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Urhobo, Efik, and others. Mr. Nair himself wore local attire as a show of respect and unity with the culture of the host country.

The offices were decorated in African colours and themes, while cultural dance troupes from different parts of Nigeria and even from Kenya entertained the staff. Local dishes were also served to the delight of everyone present. Traditional games and dances were organised, creating an atmosphere of fun and laughter that helped bring staff together regardless of their background.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Nair said Olam Agri is not just a business operating in Africa but one that sees the continent as its true home. He explained that while the company has grown into a major player in the global food and agribusiness value chain, it has always maintained deep connections with the people and cultures of Africa.

He said the company’s journey in Africa started in Nigeria in 1989 and has expanded across the continent, not only for business but for community engagement. According to him, the celebration is a reminder of the company’s journey and the values it holds dear — respect, inclusion, and cultural appreciation.

Staff members at the event shared heartfelt messages about what the celebration meant to them and how Olam Agri has provided a platform where everyone is treated equally. Adams Edafe, who works in the Shipping and Internal Audit Department and hails from Urhobo, said the Africa Day event was more than just a celebration. He described it as a platform that boosts staff morale and gives people a reason to be proud of their culture and identity.

He also praised the company for its equal opportunity policy. “Olam Agri is a place where everyone can grow. Whether you’re a cleaner or a manager, your efforts are noticed and valued. There is no racism or tribalism here — everyone is treated the same,” he said.

Another staff member, Mary Isaiah from Cross River State, said she has been with the company for 18 years and feels proud every time her culture is celebrated. According to her, Olam Agri’s respect for all cultures makes it a special place to work. “This company gives us the opportunity to feel seen and appreciated. It’s more than just a job; it’s a community,” she said.

Other staff members, like Omotolani Badmus from the Yoruba ethnic group and Muhammed Bukar from the Kanuri tribe, also shared similar views. They said the event made them feel honoured and proud of their cultural heritage. They noted that the company’s commitment to cultural inclusion is one of the reasons it stands out in Nigeria and beyond.

Olam Agri has gained international recognition for its work culture. Earlier this year, the company was named a Top Employer for the fifth year in a row by the Top Employer Institute based in the Netherlands. The award recognises companies that offer excellent working environments and policies that promote employee welfare.

Olam Agri’s operations in Africa span across several countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Chad, Senegal, South Africa, and the Republic of Congo. The company continues to use such events to reinforce its dedication to diversity, inclusion, and respect for African values.
