CBN Denies Introduction of N5,000, N10,000 Banknotes

by Radarr Africa

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked a viral report claiming it has introduced N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes to facilitate cash transactions. The apex bank, in a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, dismissed the claim as false.

“The content is not from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng,” the bank stated.

A further clarification from the CBN’s communications department reaffirmed that only its official website and authorized statements serve as valid sources of information. The bank also pointed out that the alleged statement attributed to a supposed Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Tahir Jr., was entirely fabricated, as no such individual exists in its leadership.

The false report had claimed that the new high-value banknotes would feature enhanced security measures and be introduced nationwide starting May 1, 2025. It also alleged that the N5,000 note would bear the portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, while the N10,000 note would feature Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

The CBN emphasized that it is investigating the source of the misinformation and urged the public to disregard the false claim.
