ABUJA, Nigeria — The President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Professor Sadiq Abubakar, has called on Nigerian engineers to embrace data and digital transformation to remain relevant in a rapidly changing technological world.
Abubakar made the call at the completion ceremony of the Specialised Professional Development Training for Young Engineers (Cohort 2) and Senior Engineers (Cohort 1), held in collaboration with Techlytics and Citadel for Technological and Engineering Limited.
Represented by the Registrar of COREN, Professor Okorie Uche, the COREN President stressed that continuing professional development (CPD) in engineering was a vital and lifelong commitment necessary to enhance technical competence and stay aligned with evolving industry trends.
“Continuing professional development in engineering is crucial for practitioners to remain competent, relevant, and employable. Hence, data and digital transformation must be embraced as the future of engineering in Nigeria to ensure that our engineers stay competitive in the global landscape,” Abubakar said.
Tailored Training for Engineers Across Generations
Also speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Margaret Oguntala, explained that the training was deliberately designed in two streams to meet the diverse professional needs of engineers at different career stages.
She said:
“The first category, designed for engineers above the age of 35, focused on high-level topics such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
The second category targeted engineers under 35 years, equipping them with vital skills in data analytics and cybersecurity, which are essential for navigating today’s data-driven economy.”
Oguntala revealed the participation and completion statistics for the training. For the senior engineers:
252 engineers registered,
119 were selected based on a first-come-first-served basis,
64 participants (53%) successfully completed and passed the training.
For the young engineers:
211 candidates registered,
53 participants (26%) successfully completed and passed the training.
Engineers Urged to Stay Curious and Innovative
Commending the participants, Oguntala encouraged them to build on the knowledge acquired and remain proactive in self-development.
“Today’s ceremony marks the end of this training and the start of a new phase in your professional journey. I urge you to boldly apply your new skills, be resilient in solving challenges, and stay curious in the face of technological advancement. Continuous learning is no longer optional — it is a professional necessity.”
The training program is part of broader efforts by COREN and NSE to enhance professional excellence, drive innovation, and future-proof Nigerian engineering practice in alignment with global standards.
