Egypt’s annual inflation rises to 8 per cent in January

Egypt’s annual headline inflation rate increased to 8% in January 2022, up from 4.8 per cent in January 2021, according to a press statement issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Furthermore, the monthly consumer price index (CPI) reached 119.1 points in January, reflecting a 1% increase over December 2021, according to the data.

The CAPMAS attributed the accelerated inflation to the increase in prices of the sugar and sugary food segment by 14.7%, the vegetable segment by 4.3%, the dairy products and eggs segment by 2.5%, and the meat and poultry segment by 2.3%.

Moreover, the prices of the grains and bread segment rose by 2%, while the prices of the electricity, gas, and fuel segment increased slightly by 0.2%.

On the other hand, prices of the fruits segment and the transport services segment dropped by 0.2% and 0.3%%, respectively, the agency added.
