ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government is set to partner with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to roll out free and subsidised housing units for internally displaced persons (IDPs), widows, and other vulnerable Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme.
According to a senior official at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the initiative will deliver 100 housing units in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, amounting to a total of 77,400 units nationwide.
“The Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme is to be sited in all the local government areas in Nigeria — 100 units in each of the 774 LGAs — and that’s how they arrived at 77,400 units,” the official disclosed.
Target Beneficiaries: IDPs, Widows, and Low-/No-Income Earners
The official explained that the housing project will prioritise low-income earners, defined as those earning N77,000 or less per month, and no-income earners, such as widows, disabled persons, and displaced individuals.
“That particular project is targeted specifically at low- and no-income earners… people who earn the barest minimum wage or none at all,” the source said.
While the housing initiative is yet to be officially launched, residential approval is currently pending. Once approved, implementation will begin across all geopolitical zones.
“It’s a programme that is yet to be launched. It is still awaiting residential approval… But it’s going to get approval,” the official added.
Partnership with Humanitarian Affairs Ministry
To ensure effective identification and fair allocation of housing units, the Ministry of Housing will work closely with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, which already manages programmes for vulnerable populations.
“For the ones dedicated to no-income earners… the Ministry will be collaborating with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs since they already have a process for identifying vulnerable individuals,” the source explained.
Subsidised Units for Low-Income Earners
Although units for no-income earners will be entirely free, those earning a small monthly wage will be expected to contribute a token percentage of their income as part of a highly subsidised housing package.
“The houses are going to be highly subsidised… those people cannot by themselves afford those houses,” the source noted.
Full Details Coming at Official Launch
The official launch date for the housing programme is yet to be announced. Upon launch, the allocation process, eligibility criteria, and other modalities will be publicly disclosed.
“When the programme is eventually launched, all of the modalities will be publicly declared. It’s not going to be a secret,” the official assured.
The initiative forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve social welfare, infrastructure development, and inclusive housing across the nation.
