Gas Minister Urges NNPC to Fast-Track AKK, OB3 Pipeline Completion, Expand Domestic Gas Use

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has called on the newly appointed leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) to prioritise the completion of two critical gas pipeline projects — the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) and the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) pipelines.

During a courtesy visit by the new NNPC leadership, led by Chairman Ahmadu Musa Kida and Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari, the minister underscored the importance of these projects in boosting gas supply, driving economic development, and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“These projects are key to deepening gas penetration in Nigeria and transforming our abundant natural gas resources into real economic gains,” Ekpo stated.

He revealed that Nigeria holds about 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, largely untapped for domestic use. He charged NNPC to lead the drive toward value addition in the sector, with focus on expanding domestic applications, including power generation and industrial use.

“We are exporting gas while struggling locally. We must change that,” the minister said.

He highlighted President Tinubu’s push to position Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a viable alternative to petrol, especially in the transportation sector. The initiative, according to Ekpo, aligns with the government’s plan to reduce reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and maximise domestic energy resources.

“President Tinubu places premium on CNG for vehicles,” Ekpo said, while acknowledging existing barriers like limited access to conversion kits and infrastructure. He added that the government is working to address these challenges to make CNG more affordable and widespread.

In response, NNPC Chairman Kida assured the minister of the team’s commitment to work closely with the ministry and deliver on its mandate in alignment with the government’s economic and energy goals.

“We are here to assure you of our full cooperation. We understand the importance of these projects and are ready to deliver,” Kida said.
