Ikeja Electric, LECAN train 100 young electricians on safety and best practices

Ikeja Electric Plc, in collaboration with the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN), has trained more than 100 young electricians and field technicians on safety procedures, risk management, and industry standards as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism in Nigeria’s power sector.

The one-day capacity-building programme, held in Lagos on Tuesday, was themed “Electrical Safety and Best Practices in the Electricity Industry.” It featured practical sessions on installation standards, alternative power integration, and emerging technologies in energy distribution.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Chairman of LECAN, Bada Waheed, said the training highlighted the importance of collaboration between utility companies and professional associations in promoting safety and efficiency.

“Our young electricians represent the future of Nigeria’s energy value chain, and programmes like this ensure they are skilled, informed, and safety-conscious,” Waheed said. He added that such initiatives help bridge the gap between theoretical learning and field application, preparing technicians for the realities of modern electrical work.

Also speaking, Ikeja Electric’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Kingsley Okotie, explained that the company identified knowledge and safety gaps among field technicians, which led to the partnership with LECAN.

“Electricity is a powerful tool that demands responsibility and precision. This training reinforces our zero-harm culture by empowering participants with the right knowledge to execute their work safely and efficiently,” Okotie said.

He emphasised that the collaboration aims to build safer communities and reduce accidents and electrical hazards within Ikeja Electric’s operational network.

One of the participants, Makinde Adeyinka, described the training as “eye-opening,” noting that it had improved his understanding of electrical safety standards and proper installation techniques.

The initiative forms part of Ikeja Electric’s broader corporate social responsibility drive focused on youth empowerment, workplace safety, and professional development in the electricity sector.

Industry observers say such programmes are vital for sustaining Nigeria’s energy transition and ensuring that the workforce is equipped with the technical skills required to meet modern energy demands.
