LG Electronics Nigeria has built and commissioned a solar-powered borehole for the people of Illah community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. The project is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts and is expected to help reduce the water scarcity that has affected the community for years.
According to LG, the borehole is powered by solar energy and is designed to provide clean and safe water that meets the standards of the World Health Organisation (WHO). The facility includes solar panels, stainless steel submersible pumps, and filters for purification. The company also stated that the system does not require any operating costs from the community, making it a long-term and sustainable solution.
Representatives of the Illah community, including elders and youth leaders, gathered to witness the inauguration of the project. Speaking at the event, a palace representative, Mr. Paul Udu, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community. “This is a historic day for our community,” he said. “For decades, we’ve prayed for help. Today, LG answered. Our children can now drink clean water, our women can rest, and our people can live healthier lives.”
For many years, residents of Illah relied on unsafe sources of water. Some families had to walk long distances to fetch water from streams and ponds. In some cases, children missed school just to help with the daily search for water. Many people in the community have also suffered from waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. The new borehole is expected to reduce such health issues and improve the well-being of the people.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Corporate Marketing Manager of LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr. Paul Mba, said the company believes in innovation with compassion. “We are proud to deliver not just water, but a sustainable solution powered by the same sun that shines over every Nigerian,” he said. “Today, we do not just celebrate a borehole; we celebrate hope, health, and dignity restored.”
Also speaking, the President-General of the Illah Development Union of Nigeria Worldwide, Mr. Anthony Nwegbu, described the borehole as a gift to future generations. “We are deeply grateful, and we pray that other organisations follow LG’s shining example,” he said.
LG’s Public Relations and CSR Manager, Mr. Moses Osime, also addressed the crowd. He said LG wants to be known for more than electronics. “We don’t want to be seen only in showrooms and stores,” he said. “We want to be felt in classrooms, in health centres, and now, in every glass of clean water poured in Illah.”
The event was well attended by several community leaders and representatives. Present at the ceremony were Mr. Fadi Skaf, Manager of Fouani Nigeria Ltd, Asaba Branch; Mr. Eugene Okondor, a prominent community leader; Mr. Celestine Obiokala, Secretary-General of the Illah Development Union of Nigeria (IDUN); Mr. Anthony Wajama, Publicity Secretary of IDUN; and other notable members of the community including Ozo Njoagwani, Mr. Zeal Ugbode, Mr. Ekene Isiekwe, and Ms. Anita Okonta.
Residents of Illah now have a reason to smile, as the availability of clean and safe water is expected to improve hygiene, reduce diseases, and bring comfort to many families. The project also sets an example for how private companies can support local communities and improve lives through meaningful CSR initiatives.
