Global mobile gaming platform, PUBG MOBILE, has reached out to the Makoko community in Lagos to mark this year’s Eid al-Adha celebration with food and compassion, as part of its growing commitment to corporate social responsibility in Nigeria. The initiative, held under the banner “PUBG MOBILE Cares Nigeria”, brought smiles to hundreds of residents in the waterfront settlement.
The outreach took place on Sunday, June 9, 2025, at the Apollo Community in Makoko, where over 500 residents were served freshly prepared lamb rice meals. The event was not just about food—it was designed to promote the values of giving, kindness, and unity during the Muslim festive season.
According to Brian, Head of Tencent Games (the publisher of PUBG MOBILE) for Sub-Saharan Africa, the company aims to go beyond digital entertainment by contributing to real-world communities in ways that have meaningful impact. He said the initiative was part of PUBG MOBILE’s broader effort to connect with local populations across Nigeria in thoughtful and practical ways.
“We believe in doing more than just entertaining people through gaming. We want to touch lives,” Brian said. “Eid is a time of compassion and generosity, and we’re proud to use this moment to give back to a vibrant community like Makoko.”
The event attracted enthusiastic participation from local volunteers, community members, and leaders, all working together under a large canopy by the waterfront to distribute meals. Among the volunteers were influencers, content creators, and PUBG MOBILE fans, who joined hands to make the outreach a success.
High Chief Orioye Jephtath Ogungbure, the traditional leader of the Makoko community, welcomed the team warmly and expressed deep appreciation for the gesture. He praised the company for taking the time to engage directly with the people, especially during a period of celebration like Eid.
“It’s not every day we see global brands come down to Makoko to genuinely connect with our people,” the community leader said. “This gesture means a lot to us, especially during a festive season like this. May God bless PUBG MOBILE for their thoughtfulness.”
Popular TikTok personality and gaming content creator, Patrick Okoro, also known as “Priest,” was part of the outreach team. He highlighted the organisation and spirit behind the event.
“This is one of the most organised charitable outreaches we’ve had. The coordination, the quality of the food, and the respect shown to our people are commendable,” he said.
Makoko is known as one of the most densely populated informal communities in Lagos, built partially on stilts over the Lagos Lagoon. It is often in the spotlight for its unique challenges around poverty, infrastructure, and social exclusion. For many of its residents, events like this provide not only relief but also hope that their voices are being heard beyond their community.
PUBG MOBILE, co-developed by Lightspeed Studios of Tencent Games and KRAFTON Inc., has become a global sensation since its launch in March 2018. The game is available in over 200 countries and has achieved more than 1 billion downloads, with an average of 50 million daily active users worldwide.
Beyond its gaming achievements, the company is increasingly recognised for its local partnerships and outreach activities. The Makoko outreach is one in a series of social impact efforts the company says it plans to expand in Nigeria.
Brian said the company is now looking to partner with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community groups to roll out more sustainable interventions in health, education, and youth empowerment across different parts of the country.
“In the future, we will continue these efforts and establish more connections with local NGOs to carry out meaningful corporate social responsibility activities,” he said.
As Nigeria continues to attract the attention of global tech and entertainment companies, initiatives like “PUBG MOBILE Cares Nigeria” could signal a deeper wave of community engagement and investment in underserved areas. Many observers believe such gestures, when consistently carried out, can help bridge the gap between the corporate world and local communities in need.
