MTN Nigeria comments on the impact of SIM registration rules

MTN Nigeria says it is still feeling the impact of the country’s SIM registration regulations, which restricted the connectivity of unregistered cellphone users on the network, as mobile subscribers declined by 57 000 in its third quarter to end September.

Despite the marginal quarter-on-quarter decline, Nigeria is still by far MTN Group’s largest market, with mobile subscribers still picking up almost 10% to 74.1 million mobile so far in 2022, according to the company’s quarterly financial results. MTN is Africa’s most populous nation.

The company said the decline was expected following an ongoing directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to restrict outgoing calls for subscribers whose SIMs were not linked with National Identity Numbers (NINs).

“As a result, there was a marginal quarter-on-quarter decline in mobile subscribers by approximately 57 000,” the company said.

In April, Nigerian authorities ordered cellphone companies to block all phones that are not linked to ID numbers from making outgoing voice calls.

MTN Nigeria is in the process of conducting SIM registrations for users, and as of the end of September, about 10.5 million users who had been restricted from making outgoing calls had submitted their NINs for verification, with 3.8 million reactivated.

The company said it was continuing to ramp up connections and roll out NIN recovery offers to offset the impact of churn. The average daily gross connection was 48.1% above the pre-directive level, partly driven by the cohort of subscribers who were initially restricted and opted to register new SIMs.

“We anticipate that the increase in ‘technical’ churn from affected subscribers who stopped activity after the restriction, opting instead to obtain new SIMs, will moderate in Q4 2022,” the company said.

In 2015, MTN, which is Africa’s largest wireless operator, was sanctioned after failing to disconnect 5.1 million subscribers in Nigeria, amid concerns the lines were being used by Boko Haram insurgents.

The company said on Monday that quarterly voice revenue grew by 4.4% in the nine months to end September, as more customers were reactivated, and gross connections continued to ramp up. 

Service revenue increased by 20.6% to 1.45 trillion naira (R60 billion), while profit after tax grew rose 22.1% to 269 billion naira.

Fintech revenue, which is a significant contributor to revenue, increased by 21.9%. The service includes the hugely popular Mobile Money (MoMo) platform, whose active users rose by 68.7% year-on-year to 11.2 million.

MTN Nigeria gets backup with €100 million by the European Investment Bank backs for high speed network expansion

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc is set to receive €100 million credit facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to speed up its network expansion programme.

According to a corporate disclosure by the company, the investment will aid the acceleration of 4G coverage in Nigeria and expand broadband access in line with MTN’s ambition 2025 strategy.

The statement further explained that the transaction represents EIB’s largest financing for mobile telecoms network expansion in Africa. It will help improve network capacity across the country to accommodate rising data traffic, and enhance coverage in Lagos and Ogun States.

While commenting on the deal, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola said, “We are committed to the leading digital solutions for Nigeria’s progress. This requires the continuous upgrade and expansions of our infrastructure to enable us deliver superior service. The EUR 100 million financing agreed with the EIB will accelerate 4G coverage, enhance network capacity and drive innovation that will benefit our customers.”

The Vice President of EIB Ambroise Fayolle, said, “Accelerating large scale investment in telecom network is essential to ensuring reliable access and enabling daily living and economic activity. MTN Nigeria begins 5G rollout, targets seven cities

MTN Nigeria has kicked off an open 5G pilot in the lead-up to its highly anticipated commercial launch. 

The company intends to launch 5G services in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri, and Maidugur and is testing the next-generation network infrastructure. Customers with certain enabled devices will be allowed to connect with and try out the new service where coverage is available.

To access the 5G network and enjoy its benefits, customers will need compatible devices, such as routers and mobile phones, which can be pre-ordered from designated MTN walk-in stores and online via the MTN Nigeria website and e-marketplace. The pre-ordered devices can be picked up or will be delivered to customers post the launch event scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

The advanced technology promises to extend the reach and capacity of MTN Nigeria’s data network in Nigeria and enable much faster speeds and lower latency, giving customers near-instant access to the things they care about and downloads that take seconds, instead of minutes.

MTN Nigeria launches home broadband services

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has launched Home Broadband services to accelerate broadband penetration in Nigeria.

With this launch, the Federal Government of Nigeria is a step closer to achieving its plan of over 70% broadband penetration by 2025.

With over 200 million people, Nigeria currently boasts of approximately 44.3 per cent internet connectivity, whereas other African countries, such as South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya, are at 68, 74, and 48 per cent internet penetration, respectively.

Global technology statistics closely link internet connectivity to sustainable economic growth rates. On average, the internet accounts for almost four per cent of GDP across the large economies that make up 70 per cent of global GDP. UNICEF also projects that nations with low broadband connectivity have the potential to realise up to 20 per cent GDP growth by connecting schools to the internet.

MTN currently connects over 70 million Nigerians (over 7% 4G population and 89.8 per cent coverage nationwide).

With MTN’s Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and the latest Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Home Broadband services, millions of Nigerian households, with approximately 50 per cent located in rural areas, will have access to reliable and ultra-fast broadband services to enjoy unlimited data plans, ability to connect multiple devices and share data across remote locations for online learning, working from home, streaming, gaming, smart home solutions among others.

MTN Plans N113.9bn Interim Dividend For Shareholders

MTN Nigeria Communications (MTNN) Plc, in line with its dividend policy, approved an interim dividend of N113.98 billion, representing N5.60 per share to be paid out of distributable net income.

This represents a growth of 23.1 per cent over the N4.55 per share paid in H1, 2021.

It also recorded a 28.1 per cent rise in profit after tax to N181.6 billion in the first half (H1) of the year, ended June 30, 2022.

The company, in its unaudited results for the half-year revealed that, profit after tax grew by 28.1 per cent to N181.6 billion, while earnings per share (EPS) rose by 28.1 per cent to N8.92.

Mobile subscribers for the period under review increased by 7.6 per cent to 74.1 million, added 5.7 million subscribers in H1 2022. Active data users increased by 13.2 per cent to 36.8 million, while active fintech subscribers rose by 87.3 per cent to 11.5 million.

Service revenue increased by 19.9 per cent to N947.9 billion; earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 22.1 per cent to N509.3 billion, while EBITDA margin increased by 0.9 percentage points (pp) to 53.6 per cent.

Speaking on the company’s performance in H1, CEO, MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola said: “during the first half of 2022, we made good progress in strengthening the resilience of the business in the face of our increasingly challenging operating environment with rising energy, food and general inflation putting pressure on consumer spending.

“The conflict in Ukraine as well as implementation of a ‘zero-COVID’ policy in China, has also put a strain on global supply chains. To mitigate global supply chain and exchange rate risks, we accelerated capital expenditure for network expansion into the H1 2022.”

He explained that, “we deployed capex of N311.6 billion to accelerate the rollout of our 4G network, which now covers 75.3 per cent compared to 65.1 per cent in H1 2021 of the population and accounts for 77.9 per cent of data traffic compared to 67.2 per cent in H1 2021.

“In addition, having acquired one lot of 100MHz in the 3.5GHz spectrum band from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), we are on track to launch 5G services across the country in Q3, 2022.

He also said: “we achieved some important strategic milestones in H1 towards delivering our Ambition 2025 strategy. 5G: MTN, Huawei Install 100 5G sites ahead of launch in Nigeria

MTN Nigeria and Huawei Nigeria Technologies Company Ltd., have installed over 100 fifth generation (5G) mobile technology cell sites in the country ahead of the commercial launch of the service.

MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications Limited were awarded the country’s two 100MHz spectrum licences in the 3.5GHz spectrum band for 5G in the auctioned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) last December and were issued their licences in March 2022 after payment.

With a six month period allowed by the Commission for the 5G licences to put their acts together ahead, it is expected that any moment from end of August this year, the two winners will announce a formal date for the commercial launch of 5G in Nigeria.

According to NCC’s rollout obligations for winners, in the first phase, rollout service in at least one state in each geo-political zone: Southwest, South-south, Southeast, North central (including FCT), Northwest and Northeast zones within one to two years.

At the ‘5G Day: The Future is Coming’ organised by Huawei Nigeria and MTN Nigeria for fellows of the inaugural Media Innovation Programme going on at the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos, the two companies disclosed that work is going on to ensure that Nigerians experience 5G in no distant time.
The director of ICT, Huawei Nigeria, Ashwani Mishra, stated that “4G changed lives, 5G changes society. 5G will change everything about communications. We are working day and night to give Nigerians a truly 5G experience as we work with our partner, MTN Nigeria.”

He disclosed that MTN will follow the Information Memorandum on 5G for the 5G winners as the launch will be phases, stating that Huawei is number one in 13 countries on 5G NR. According to a report by Leadership MTN is installing 5G atennas and base stations on its masts as a way of fast-tracking the rolling obligations.

The NCC states that “Service roll out in each state would mean a minimum of 5 sites in a state. Minimum Download speed of 100 Mbps is to be achieved by the operators and shall be measured using applicable measurement tools. A Risk Management Framework for 5G shall be developed in due course.”
Meanwhile, chief marketing officer, MTN Nigeria, Adia Sowho has stated that 5G will reduce latency (i.e. response time) to allow for real-time communication and improve data transfer, especially upstream speeds.
She said 5G will bring about 10 times user experience throughput, 10 times connection density, 10 times decrease in latency, three times spectrum efficiency, 100 times traffic capacity: driving hyper-densification of network with more small cells, and 100 times network efficiency optimising network energy consumption with more efficient processing.

Sowho added that MTN’s 5G network will also lead to longer battery life; better indoor coverage in underground, parking garages, cellars; and efficient, simpler hardware and less bandwidth.
Among other benefits is that 5G will accelerate Internet of Things such as smart cities, smart homes, healthcare, transportation, smart manufacturing, cars, agriculture, home appliances, wearables, and energy engagement, she said.

The CMO of MTN Nigeria explained further: “Imagine you had a long day at work and you are stressed out. Your smart Air conditioner, smartphone, car, water heater, music system, and smart bulbs are all connected through the internet and in coordination with each other.
“Now your smart wristband identifies the stress level through your heart and blood pressure rate and shares the information or data to the other connected devices. Your car communicates with devices at your house and indicates that you are nearby.

“Inside the house, your Air conditioner, lights, and water heater are already turned on for you. Your music system plays music for relaxation. These all will be ready as pre-instructed, and now you can take a warm shower with beautiful music. How do you feel about it?” she concluded.
According to the NCC, 5G network operators would be required to meet all auction conditions as specified in the IM; carry out periodic penetration testing, and vulnerability scan of their networks to ensure security of the systems.

In the second phase which is within three to five years, rollout should take place in additional six states other than those in first phase across the six geo-political zones. In the third phase which is within six to 10 years, operators are encouraged to roll out across all other states.

According to statement from the company, Onyinye is a business leader with over 23 years of experience in the telecommunications, logistics and education sectors.

Her expertise includes sales, marketing and customer management, conceptualizing go-to-market models and nurturing new products into mature revenue-generating engines.

MTN’s MoMo Payment Service Bank sets to begin operations in Nigeria

MoMo Payment Service Bank (PSB), the fintech subsidiary of MTN Nigeria Plc has commenced commercial operations in Nigeria.

The telecom giant notified its shareholders and the investing public of the commencement of operations via a corporate disclosure signed by the company’s secretary, Uto Ukpanah and filed with the Exchange (NGX).

This comes after a successful pilot initiated on May 16, 2022, in commemoration of the launch of the company’s GSM operations on May 16 2001, and the company’s listing by introduction on the Nigerian Exchange Limited on May 16 2019.

According to the disclosure, the fintech PSB is positioned to enable millions of unbanked and underserved Nigerians to access a wide range of financial service products with an expansive agent network of over 166,000 agents and digitized partnership infrastructure.

The fintech PSB will be dedicated to eliminating frictions from everyday payment by digitizing cash payments.
