On the orders of the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, the Minister of the Interior, Kamel Feki, supervised, on Tuesday September 12, 2023, the dispatch of a civil protection team specializing in search and rescue, aboard a military aircraft to support the Libyan state’s search and rescue efforts.

The team is made up of approximately 52 members, including managers and officers from the specialized unit, four rescue dogs, three doctors, a diving team and a pumping team equipped with high-flow pumps.

The Interior Ministry says advanced thermal monitoring devices and a drone will be used to locate victims swept away by the waters. A field hospital, part of civil protection, will also be deployed to contribute to relief operations and the care of the injured.

This initiative was taken following the Mediterranean storm Daniel which hit eastern Libya on Sunday September 10, 2023. According to the Lana news agency, more than 2,000 people were killed and at least 5,000 are missing, in a provisional report. The Libyan Ministry of the Interior clarified on Monday, September 11, that entire neighborhoods were swept away by the waves towards the sea, affirming that the situation is catastrophic.

Tunisia expressed its sincere condolences to the Libyan people as well as its absolute solidarity, following the significant human and material losses during the floods which swept several regions of the country.

The President of the Republic ordered urgent coordination with the Libyan authorities to help them overcome this ordeal, by providing the appropriate human and material resources in order to strengthen search, rescue and care efforts for the injured.
