The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has denied claims that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates has been cancelled. The Council has reassured students, parents, and stakeholders that the examination has not been nullified, contrary to viral reports making rounds on social media.
WAEC disclosed in an official statement on Sunday, July 20, 2025, that the rumour of cancellation is false, misleading, and did not come from any credible or official source. The Council also announced that results of the just concluded examination will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
The statement was signed by Moyosola Adesina, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs. Adesina clarified that the viral information alleged that WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education had jointly cancelled the examination due to allegations of widespread examination malpractice and the digital leakage of question papers. However, WAEC emphasized that no such decision was taken, describing the circulating publication as baseless and intended to create unnecessary panic.
According to WAEC, the marking of scripts for the 2025 WASSCE has already been concluded, and the Council is currently preparing the results for public release. “The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press release alleging the cancellation of the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025. The said examination has not been cancelled,” the statement read.
WAEC urged the general public to disregard the fake news and assured that any official communication regarding the examination, results, or related matters would be disseminated through the Council’s verified social media pages, official website, and accredited media outlets. The Council reiterated that all official press statements are released and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Education also dismissed the claims that the 2025 WASSCE had been cancelled. The Ministry described the reports as false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to incite public concern. It made clear that no collaboration between the Ministry and WAEC took place regarding the alleged cancellation.
The Ministry further explained that it neither approved nor announced the cancellation of any public examination in the country. It stated that the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations are currently ongoing nationwide without any disruption, as scheduled.
The Ministry of Education advised students, parents, school administrators, and other stakeholders to ignore the misinformation and rely strictly on updates provided via official government channels and recognized educational institutions. The Ministry also warned that individuals spreading false information to mislead the public would be investigated and prosecuted by law enforcement agencies.
Education authorities emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of national examinations such as WASSCE and NECO. They assured that adequate measures are always in place to protect examinations from malpractice, leakage, and any form of compromise.
In recent years, social media has become a fertile ground for the spread of misinformation, particularly during examination seasons. Authorities have advised the public to verify any news related to education through WAEC’s official communication platforms before sharing or acting on them.
WAEC is one of the key examination bodies in West Africa, responsible for administering the WASSCE to school candidates across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. The examination serves as a gateway for secondary school students seeking admission into tertiary institutions within and outside the region.
The 2025 WASSCE results, once released, will enable candidates to proceed with university admissions, scholarship applications, and other post-secondary opportunities. WAEC has consistently worked on improving the integrity of its examination processes through the use of technology and improved monitoring mechanisms to curb malpractice.
As the August 4, 2025, date approaches, candidates are encouraged to stay calm and keep track of official announcements to know when and how to access their results.
