Airtel Africa has outlined a set of strategic initiatives — including plans to list its mobile money arm, ongoing talks to utilise Starlink capacity, and possible integration of crypto-related services — as part of efforts to reposition its operations across the 14 African markets where it currently operates.
The telecommunications group disclosed that it is in discussions with regulators in several countries regarding access to satellite infrastructure to enhance connectivity in rural and underserved regions where conventional network systems remain limited.
According to the company, the proposed satellite collaboration is designed to strengthen coverage, protect market share amid rising competition, and meet growing enterprise demand for reliable connectivity in remote locations.
Group Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar said leveraging satellite technology could significantly improve network continuity and service quality in areas that terrestrial infrastructure has struggled to reach, adding that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to deepen digital inclusion across its footprint.
The firm also reaffirmed that it is proceeding with plans to list its mobile money division, noting that management is currently evaluating the most suitable market for the public offering. The listing, it said, is expected to unlock shareholder value while accelerating expansion in Africa’s fast-growing digital payments ecosystem.
In addition, the company signalled openness to incorporating virtual asset solutions — including stablecoins and other cryptocurrency-linked services — into its platform, depending on customer demand and regulatory approvals. However, it clarified that no specific timeline has yet been set for such offerings.
Industry analysts say the combination of satellite connectivity, fintech expansion and capital-market activity could mark a significant shift in the group’s growth strategy, positioning it to compete more aggressively in both telecommunications and digital financial services across the continent.
