United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has been named the strongest Nigerian brand in the 2024 Brand Finance ranking, moving up from 9th place last year to the top spot. The report, released by Brand Finance, a global consultancy known for brand valuation, gave UBA a brand strength score of 92.4 out of 100, earning it a AAA+ rating—the highest rating for any Nigerian brand this year.
According to the report made available on Wednesday, UBA’s rise to the top was driven by its strong brand familiarity, increasing customer preference, and consistent presence in the Nigerian market. The bank also made a mark on the global stage by ranking as the 13th strongest banking brand in the world, out of the top 500 global banking brands reviewed in the latest Brand Finance Banking 500 report.
The Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at UBA, Alero Ladipo, said the achievement was not by chance but the result of clear strategies and customer-first policies.
“This year’s ranking is no coincidence; it is the result of deliberate planning, strategic investments, and an unwavering focus on customer satisfaction,” Ladipo said. “We remain steadfast in our mission to adapt to the evolving landscape, ensuring we consistently deliver exceptional value and keep our customers delighted.”
UBA is one of the largest banks in Africa, with operations in 20 African countries and international offices in the United Kingdom, United States, France, and the United Arab Emirates. The bank serves more than 45 million customers across various segments, including retail, commercial, and institutional banking. It is also known for pushing financial inclusion and leveraging digital innovation to provide accessible banking solutions.
The Brand Finance report highlighted UBA’s successful efforts in strengthening its reputation and customer loyalty, particularly through its focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), digital banking, and youth-friendly financial products. UBA has also launched a customised banking solution for SMEs, aimed at supporting business growth and enhancing access to finance.
This recognition further strengthens UBA’s standing as a forward-thinking and resilient financial institution, both in Africa and on the global scene. The bank has previously won several awards for its innovation, leadership, and customer service.
UBA’s latest accolade comes at a time when Nigerian brands are facing rising competition both locally and internationally. It reflects the growing impact of homegrown institutions that are not only competing with global brands but are also earning recognition for their performance, innovation, and customer trust.
The Brand Finance ranking is based on several criteria including marketing investment, stakeholder equity, business performance, and the company’s ability to drive future revenue. A AAA+ rating is the highest possible rating in the index, indicating a brand with exceptional strength and influence.
UBA’s recognition is expected to boost investor confidence and customer loyalty as it continues to expand its reach and introduce new financial solutions tailored to the changing needs of businesses and individuals across Africa.
