Shafa Energy, a subsidiary of AYM Shafa Holdings Limited, has launched its compressed natural gas (CNG) brand, Shafa CNG, with the unveiling of a new station in Abuja. The move is part of efforts to support the Federal Government’s clean energy policy and offer Nigerians a cheaper alternative to petrol, especially in the wake of fuel subsidy removal.
In a statement released ahead of the official launch, the company said Shafa CNG is a response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s plan to ease the economic burden on Nigerians by expanding access to affordable energy options. The initiative is also in line with the government’s broader plan to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy future for the country.
Executive Chairman of AYM Shafa Holdings Limited, Alhaji Yakubu Maishanu, described the launch as a major milestone in the company’s journey toward sustainable energy innovation.
“Shafa CNG represents a major step forward in our commitment to sustainable energy solutions,” Maishanu said. “This initiative not only aligns with the Federal Government’s vision for a cleaner and more affordable energy future but also demonstrates our dedication to reducing our environmental footprint and enhancing the lives of Nigerians.”
He explained that the 2023 fuel subsidy removal has increased demand for alternative fuels like CNG, which is seen as a more affordable and environmentally friendly solution for transportation.
Maishanu noted that the Federal Government, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), has scaled up CNG infrastructure across the country. According to him, the number of conversion centres has increased from seven to 193, and the initiative has already attracted $440 million in private sector investment.
The PCNGI, launched in 2023, aims to convert at least one million vehicles to run on CNG by 2027. The programme also targets the establishment of 1,000 refuelling and conversion stations across Nigeria. Shafa Energy’s participation in the initiative reflects growing private sector involvement in achieving the federal goals.
“Our Shafa CNG initiative is designed to provide reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly solutions that contribute to the well-being of our communities and the prosperity of our nation,” Maishanu stated.
He added that the project is a result of the company’s innovation drive and a strong team focused on solving real problems for customers and the environment.
“This is a significant milestone that underscores our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint while improving the quality of life for Nigerians,” he said. “We are proud of this achievement and excited about the long-term benefits it will bring.”
Maishanu also said the company looks forward to building partnerships with key stakeholders in the energy and transport sectors to deepen adoption of CNG nationwide. He stressed that Shafa CNG is not just about business growth but about driving national development, energy efficiency, and climate responsibility.
“As we embark on this new chapter, we look forward to working with our partners, customers, and stakeholders to promote the adoption of CNG and contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria,” he concluded.
The launch of Shafa CNG adds momentum to Nigeria’s energy transition efforts and reinforces the private sector’s critical role in shaping the future of energy in the country.
