Eastern Cape Police Launch Murder Probe After Walter Sisulu University Staff Member Gunned Down

EASTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA – Police have opened a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a Walter Sisulu University (WSU) staff member, whose body was discovered inside a parked car riddled with bullet wounds, according to a report by IOL.

The chilling incident has shocked the academic community and sparked urgent calls for justice. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that forensic experts were on the scene, meticulously collecting evidence and analyzing the circumstances surrounding the murder. The identity of the victim has not yet been made public, pending official notification of the family.

According to Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, authorities are treating the case with utmost seriousness. She confirmed that SAPS has mobilised maximum resources to fast-track the investigation and follow every available lead.

“We have deployed a dedicated task team to ensure that this heinous act does not go unpunished. The community can rest assured that we will leave no stone unturned,” said Major General Kupiso.

Police have not yet established a motive for the killing, and no arrests have been made at this stage. Residents in the area where the car was found are urged to come forward with any information that could assist in the case.

The Walter Sisulu University administration has not released an official statement, but sources within the institution described the victim as a committed staff member and expressed grief over the incident. Several colleagues and students took to social media to share condolences and demand justice.

The tragedy comes amid broader concerns about violent crime in the Eastern Cape, where residents have repeatedly called for greater police visibility and action against gun-related violence.

Community leaders and civil society organisations have also weighed in, calling on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the safety of educators, students, and professionals across the province. “This was not just a crime against one person. It’s a crime against an entire institution, an entire community,” said a spokesperson for a local safety advocacy group.

As investigations continue, police have urged the public to remain calm and patient, while also encouraging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or visit their nearest police station.
