TD Africa Secures Global AI and Data Privacy Certifications, Sets New Benchmark for Africa

TD Africa, one of the biggest technology distributors in Sub-Saharan Africa, has achieved two major international certifications that place the company at the centre of Africa’s push for responsible artificial intelligence and stronger data governance.

The company, in a statement released in Lagos, confirmed that it earned the ISO 42001 certification, which is the world’s first framework for managing AI systems responsibly, and ISO 27701, which focuses on data privacy. Both certifications are rare among African companies and are expected to set new standards for the continent’s role in global technology.

The Chief Executive Officer of TD Africa, Mrs Chioma Ekeh, described the certifications as a bold step towards ensuring Africa is not left behind in the global technology conversation. According to her, TD Africa is determined to go beyond compliance and build trust around digital solutions.

“These certifications are not just badges of compliance; they reflect our deep commitment to building Africa’s digital resilience with trust, governance, and accountability at the core,” Ekeh said. “Africa must not remain a passive consumer of global innovation but must actively shape and co-create solutions that reflect our unique realities.”

She added that the opportunities of AI in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, financial inclusion, and digital governance are limitless, stressing that Africa must be fully prepared to harness them responsibly.

ISO 42001 is the first global framework guiding ethical and transparent deployment of AI, ensuring that artificial intelligence is aligned with human values and global standards. ISO 27701, on the other hand, sets clear requirements for protecting personal data, which has become critical as data breaches and privacy risks increase worldwide.

TD Africa, which has operated for almost three decades, has been one of the leading distributors of technology solutions across 47 African countries. The company has built strong partnerships with global technology leaders and invested heavily in infrastructure that promotes resilience. Through its TecHerdemy initiative, TD Africa has also trained more than 400 women in technology, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity in Africa’s digital growth.

Ekeh emphasised that the certifications are not only a win for the company but also for Africa’s participation in the global AI ecosystem.

“This achievement is not just about TD Africa. It is a milestone for Africa. The global AI conversation cannot be left to Silicon Valley or Beijing alone. Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, Kigali, and Johannesburg must also have a strong voice. And TD Africa is proud to amplify that voice. We are no longer waiting for tomorrow to happen; we are preparing tomorrow, today,” she said.

Industry observers note that TD Africa’s latest move may encourage other African firms to adopt higher global standards in AI ethics and data governance. This, they argue, could boost Africa’s competitiveness in the global tech space while providing a foundation for safer and more innovative digital solutions.
