The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has been recognised for her outstanding leadership and contribution to the transformation of Nigeria’s airport operations. She received the 2025 Excellence Award from the Centre for International Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS) during the organisation’s End-of-the-Year Public Lecture, Awards Ceremony and Cocktail held in Lagos over the weekend.
According to a statement from FAAN, the award highlights Kuku’s unwavering commitment to excellence, her strategic contributions to national development, and her dedication to improving standards within Nigeria’s aviation sector. Since assuming office two years ago, Mrs. Kuku has spearheaded initiatives that modernised airport operations, improved passenger services, and strengthened operational efficiency across the country’s airports.
The organisers of the CIAPS Excellence Awards said the 2025 edition celebrates individuals whose achievements go beyond the scope of their official roles and have a significant impact on society at large. FAAN noted that the award reflects the positive results of Kuku’s efforts to position Nigeria’s airports among the best in Africa through enhanced safety protocols, infrastructure upgrades, and staff capacity development.
CIAPS explained that the selection of Kuku followed a rigorous assessment process that included performance reviews, sectoral nominations, and independent verification to ensure that recipients meet high standards of professionalism and societal contribution.
Commenting on the recognition, FAAN said the award underscores the authority’s progress under Kuku’s leadership, which has included reforms in airport management, passenger experience, and operational accountability. The authority also highlighted her role in driving key projects that have enhanced airport facilities, streamlined operations, and ensured compliance with international aviation standards.
Stakeholders in the aviation sector praised the recognition, noting that Kuku’s tenure has seen measurable improvements in both domestic and international airport services. Her leadership has been credited with boosting operational efficiency, reducing delays, and promoting a culture of professionalism among airport staff.
The CIAPS Excellence Award adds to a series of acknowledgements Kuku has received for her visionary leadership and hands-on approach to addressing challenges in Nigeria’s aviation industry. Observers say her work has strengthened the country’s position as a major aviation hub in West Africa.
As Nigeria continues to expand and modernise its airport infrastructure, experts say that leadership like Kuku’s is critical to sustaining growth, attracting investment, and providing world-class services to travellers. The award further signals confidence in FAAN’s direction and reinforces the importance of effective leadership in public institutions.
