Nigerian controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has publicly declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a man of action who focuses on delivering results rather than responding to critics. In a recent video shared on social media, Portable commended President Tinubu for his leadership, claiming that Nigeria is making significant progress under his administration.
Portable, known for his outspoken nature and controversial statements, said that since he was born, Nigerians have often heard promises that the country would get better, but according to him, it is only under Tinubu that he has seen actual improvements. Speaking passionately, Portable said, “Since when dem don born me, wey Nigeria don dey, e go better, e go better, na Tinubu tenure Nigeria better, na Tinubu make Nigeria better, Tinubu best president.”
He added that those criticising the president are being deceptive and urged Nigerians to see the positive changes happening across the country. “Tinubu’s time is the best. Don’t let anyone deceive you. Tinubu is doing what he promised. Go and check. Things are getting better. We are behind Tinubu 100%,” Portable said.
The singer’s open endorsement of President Tinubu comes amid widespread debates and mixed reactions regarding the state of the Nigerian economy and governance since Tinubu took office in May 2023. While some citizens have raised concerns over economic hardship, fuel price hikes, and inflation, others argue that the government is making efforts to stabilise the economy through reforms and long-term policy interventions.
Portable, however, dismissed the negative narratives, insisting that President Tinubu is fulfilling his promises to Nigerians. He described the president as a silent achiever who does not waste time responding to insults or public criticism but rather focuses on working for the benefit of the country. “Tinubu no dey respond to insult, him dey work silently. Nigeria dey progress,” Portable added in the video.
The artist’s endorsement has attracted various reactions from the public, especially on social media platforms where some Nigerians agreed with him, while others criticised his stance. Some users accused Portable of supporting the president for personal gains, while others argued that everyone is entitled to their opinion on national leadership.
Portable, who has built a reputation for speaking his mind regardless of public opinion, is not new to controversial statements or political endorsements. He had previously declared support for politicians in the past, which often sparked debates among his fans and the wider public.
President Tinubu’s administration has embarked on several economic reforms since assuming office, including the removal of fuel subsidy, efforts to unify exchange rates, and initiatives to attract foreign investments. The government has also launched various programmes aimed at supporting small businesses, creating jobs, and stabilising the economy, although many citizens say the impact is yet to be felt fully at the grassroots.
Despite the challenges, the Tinubu government maintains that it is laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth and improved governance. The president has continued to urge Nigerians to be patient with the ongoing reforms, promising that the sacrifices made now will yield long-term benefits for the country.
Portable’s message of support adds to the voices backing the administration, particularly from public figures and entertainers who often wield influence over public opinion. Whether his endorsement will sway more Nigerians to view the administration favourably remains uncertain, especially as the nation continues to grapple with economic realities.
