ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has announced major diplomatic achievements over the past nine months, describing its performance as a significant step forward in protecting and promoting the country’s national interests across political, economic, and social fronts.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, MoFA Spokesperson, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, said the government had made “notable progress” in areas ranging from foreign relations and investment promotion to citizen protection and international cooperation.
Amb. Nebiat highlighted that one of the key wins was the restoration of diplomatic ties with Somalia, which had previously experienced some strains. “Relations with Somalia have been revitalized and returned to a state of normalcy,” he noted.
He also pointed to a shift in how the international community now views Ethiopia’s position on the Red Sea, stressing that global understanding is increasingly aligning with Ethiopia’s development goals and regional aspirations.
On the legislative front, Ethiopia ratified 11 bilateral and multilateral agreements and signed 33 new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to strengthen cooperation across diverse sectors. These agreements are expected to boost trade, infrastructure, and diplomatic engagement.
Investment and Economic Diplomacy Ethiopia’s renewed foreign policy focus has also spurred economic interest, with over 533 foreign companies conducting pre-investment visits to the country within the nine-month period. Business forums and strategic dialogues with investors have amplified Ethiopia’s visibility as a viable investment destination, further supported by ongoing economic reforms.
“These interactions are helping reshape the narrative around Ethiopia and unlock new opportunities for international collaboration,” Amb. Nebiat said.
Focus on Citizens Abroad One of the Ministry’s most applauded efforts was its successful repatriation of over 92,000 Ethiopian citizens facing difficult conditions abroad—mainly in the Middle East. Amb. Nebiat confirmed that MoFA had also launched operations to bring back Ethiopians from Myanmar, with more than 130 already repatriated and another 200 expected within the next ten days.
He warned against illegal migration, especially to Asian countries, stressing the dangers of trafficking and urging citizens to follow proper legal channels for overseas employment.
“Illegal migration exposes our citizens to exploitation and abuse,” Amb. Nebiat stated. “We urge them to work with proper authorities to ensure their safety.”
Looking Ahead The Ministry’s review outlined a diplomatic strategy that balances traditional statecraft with citizen-focused policies. Amb. Nebiat concluded that Ethiopia’s recent successes reflect a dynamic approach that is not only repositioning the country on the international stage but also delivering real benefits at home.
“The performance of the last nine months is a strong indicator of how Ethiopia is using diplomacy to drive development, ensure the dignity of its people, and secure its place in a rapidly changing global environment,” he said.
