Governor Hyacinth Alia has congratulated Alfred Emberga on his emergence as the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly following an emergency plenary held in Makurdi on Sunday, August 24, 2025. Emberga was elected by lawmakers after the sudden resignation of the former Speaker, Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia described Emberga’s election as a demonstration of the confidence reposed in him by members of the assembly. He expressed optimism that the new leadership would strengthen legislative activities in the state and work towards improving the welfare of the people.
The governor noted that he expects the new Speaker to drive policies and enact laws that will positively impact the lives of Benue residents. He also urged the House to continue to uphold cooperation with the executive and the judiciary to promote good governance.
“While appreciating the outgone Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, for his service and leadership during his time in office, the governor assures the newly elected Speaker, as well as all members of the Benue State House of Assembly, of his unwavering support,” the statement read.
Governor Alia stressed his administration’s readiness to work closely with the legislature to ensure peace, stability, and progress in Benue State. He said the executive will remain open to collaboration with the lawmakers in addressing the challenges facing the state and in delivering dividends of democracy to the people.
Emberga’s emergence has already attracted political attention within and outside Benue, with analysts describing the development as significant in reshaping legislative priorities in the state. His election also comes at a time when the Assembly is expected to play a key role in oversight functions and in providing checks and balances that support accountability.
Dajoh, who resigned unexpectedly, had served as Speaker during a period of critical legislative engagement in the state. While details of his resignation remain sketchy, political observers believe the transition of leadership in the assembly may bring about new dynamics in Benue politics.
Governor Alia, however, assured that his administration will continue to build harmony across the three arms of government. He emphasised that cooperation among the executive, legislature, and judiciary remains central to the development agenda of his government.
With Emberga now at the helm of the state legislature, expectations are high among stakeholders and citizens that his leadership will focus on laws that address pressing socio-economic issues, ranging from infrastructure development to security and youth empowerment.
