Kansai Plascon Donates Shs 50 Million in Paint for Buganda Kingdom's Bulange Refurbishment

Kansai Plascon Uganda has officially handed over paint and related items worth Shs 50 million to the Buganda Kingdom for the refurbishment of Bulange-Mengo, the kingdom’s iconic administrative headquarters and cultural heritage site.

The donation forms part of Plascon’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, reinforcing the paint manufacturer’s longstanding commitment to community development and cultural preservation. The handover ceremony, held last week, was attended by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga and senior kingdom officials, with Plascon Uganda led by Managing Director Santosh Gumte.

Now in its seventh year, the partnership between Plascon and Buganda Kingdom has become a model of purposeful collaboration focused on community upliftment, preservation of heritage, and long-term investment in people and culture.

This year’s contribution includes not only high-quality paint but also a professional painting team tasked with restoring Bulange’s structure to its original beauty. Speaking at the ceremony, Gumte underscored the significance of the donation, calling it more than just a CSR gesture.

“It is a great privilege for us to contribute to the refurbishment of Bulange-Mengo, a building that is not only central to the kingdom’s administration but also deeply symbolic of Buganda’s history and culture. We view this not merely as a donation, but as a meaningful contribution to safeguarding our shared heritage,” said Gumte.

He emphasized Plascon’s broader vision of using its platform to work alongside cultural institutions for sustainable and impactful change.

“Our partnership with Buganda goes beyond business. Through continued support in health, education, agriculture, and sports, we are determined to give back to the public,” he added.

Katikkiro Mayiga praised Plascon’s consistency, integrity, and community-centred approach, noting that such corporate values are increasingly rare.

“Companies such as Plascon are key to the future of our nation. Uganda’s population is largely young, and responsible businesses like Plascon create employment, expand opportunity, and contribute significantly to our economy,” he said.

Mayiga also highlighted the importance of empathy, corporate citizenship, and the role of private-sector partnerships in nation-building.

“A company with empathy and a sense of purpose will always stand the test of time. Plascon has demonstrated that they care, not only through product quality and brand consistency but also through their willingness to invest in the heritage of Buganda,” he added.

Plascon’s involvement in the preservation of Buganda’s landmarks extends well beyond Bulange. The company has previously supported the refurbishment of Twekobe, Butikkiro, and other culturally significant buildings within the kingdom. These efforts ensure that the symbols of Buganda’s history remain vibrant and well-maintained.

Beyond infrastructure, Plascon also supports youth development through sports, including sponsorship of the Masaza Cup and clubs like Buddu FC, helping nurture grassroots talent and foster regional pride.
