Lagos takes the lead as Africa’s ferry safety development begins

The Lagos State Waterways Authority has entered a strategic partnership with Interferry to launch a ferry safety development and mentoring programme aimed at strengthening standards across Nigeria’s inland waterways sector.

The initiative, described by stakeholders as a significant step towards improving marine safety, is expected to enhance operational efficiency while raising professional benchmarks among ferry operators. The 18-month programme will draw on the expertise of Interferry specialists, alongside facilitators from established maritime institutions, industry operators and regulatory bodies within Nigeria.

Interferry, which holds consultative status at the International Maritime Organization, is expected to provide technical guidance and global best practices throughout the programme.

Authorities confirmed that a rigorous verification process, concluded on March 18, 2026, ensured that all selected participants met stringent eligibility and professional criteria.

A total of 50 participants have been admitted into the cohort, including ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers, safety officers, compliance professionals and fleet managers. The curriculum will span key areas such as ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, as well as preventive and predictive maintenance.

The programme, which blends self-paced online learning with virtual mentorship and monthly hands-on sessions, is scheduled to commence in May 2026.
