Morocco's Automotive Sector Poised for Remarkable Growth, Forecasts Industry Minister

Morocco’s Minister of Industry, Ryad Mezzour, anticipates a significant surge in the production capacity of the country’s automotive sector in the coming years. In an exclusive interview with Medias24, Minister Mezzour revealed ambitious projections, stating that the production capacity is expected to reach an impressive 1.5 million cars by the year 2026.

According to Minister Mezzour, the automotive industry is on the cusp of achieving a major milestone, with the imminent completion of Stellantis’ expansion plans set to double its production capacity. “We will hit the 1 million car milestone next year as Stellantis doubles its production capacity,” Mezzour affirmed.

Building on this momentum, Morocco aims to double its current production capacity to 1.5 million cars by 2026. This expansion underscores the country’s growing prominence as a leading automotive manufacturing hub in the region.

Renowned automotive giants Renault and Stellantis have established a strong presence in Morocco, with state-of-the-art factories located in Tangier and Kenitra. Additionally, Morocco boasts a robust network of local suppliers, facilitating the integration of locally made parts in the vehicles it exports.

In anticipation of the global shift towards electric vehicles (EVs), Morocco is proactively preparing its automotive clusters for the transition. A pivotal step in this direction is the establishment of an industrial zone in Casablanca dedicated to EV battery production.

Exciting developments are already underway, with the initiation of investments in critical EV battery components. China’s BTR New Material Group has committed to establishing a cathode plant in Tangier, marking a significant milestone in Morocco’s EV battery manufacturing journey.

The cathode plant, with an estimated investment of $300 million, is poised to produce 50,000 tons of cathode annually, thereby bolstering Morocco’s position as a key player in the burgeoning EV market.
