MTN Nigeria Increases Weekly Data Plan to 6GB for N2,500

by Radarr Africa

Telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, has adjusted its weekly data plan, increasing the allocation to 6GB for N2,500. This comes as part of the company’s ongoing review of its data offerings in response to market demands and economic realities.

Subscribers previously received 4.5GB monthly plan for the same price. The new plan provides an additional 1.5GB, which MTN says is aimed at offering more value to customers who rely heavily on data for work, streaming, and social media.

While some users have welcomed the increase, others argue that the overall cost of data remains high, considering recent economic challenges in Nigeria. Many customers have expressed concerns over data depletion, network quality, and the affordability of internet services in the country.

MTN Nigeria, a subsidiary of South Africa’s MTN Group, remains one of the leading telecom providers in Nigeria, with millions of subscribers. The company has faced criticism in the past over price adjustments, but it maintains that its pricing reflects operational costs and the need to invest in network expansion.

According to a statement from MTN, “We continuously review our data plans to ensure our customers enjoy the best value while maintaining service quality.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been monitoring telecom pricing structures to ensure fair competition and consumer protection. However, there have been calls for the government to intervene further in regulating data pricing to make internet access more affordable for Nigerians.

As digital dependence grows across sectors, from education to business, reliable and affordable internet remains a crucial issue for many Nigerians. Whether this new adjustment will lead to further changes in MTN’s data pricing strategy remains to be seen.
