Nigerian Breweries Secures Full Acquisition of Distell Wines and Spirits

by Radarr Africa

In a bold move to consolidate its dominance in the alcoholic beverages sector, Nigerian Breweries Plc has successfully completed the full acquisition of Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria Limited, expanding its footprint in Nigeria’s wine and spirits market.

The landmark acquisition, which was finalized following all regulatory approvals, marks a strategic integration of Distell’s operations under the Nigerian Breweries umbrella, a subsidiary of global beverage giant Heineken N.V.

Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria Limited, known for its range of popular brands like 4th Street Wine, Drostdy-Hof, Amarula, and Nederburg, now becomes a fully owned unit of Nigerian Breweries. According to a corporate disclosure filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), the transaction aligns with the company’s long-term growth strategy aimed at diversifying its product portfolio and strengthening market share beyond the lager and stout segments.

The Managing Director/CEO of Nigerian Breweries, Hans Essaadi, described the move as a “strategic leap” that would create greater value for stakeholders and consumers alike, while also providing opportunities for job creation, innovation, and local economic development.

He noted that the acquisition enables Nigerian Breweries to tap into a broader consumer base seeking premium wine and spirit experiences, especially in urban markets with evolving tastes and preferences.

Industry analysts have hailed the deal as a smart diversification play amid declining beer consumption rates and shifting consumer trends. With the addition of Distell’s premium portfolio, Nigerian Breweries is expected to compete more aggressively with other key players in Nigeria’s beverage space, including international spirit brands making waves in the country.

The acquisition also aligns with Heineken’s global ambition to consolidate its alcoholic beverages business across emerging markets, with Nigeria being a key focus.
