Peter Mukhito Pledges Development for Lilongwe City Centre

Member of Parliament (MP) for Lilongwe City Centre under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Mr. Peter Mukhito, has promised to bring real development and lasting change to the constituency if elected in the next general elections.

Mr. Mukhito, who is also serving as the Secretary General of the DPP, made the promise during a campaign tour in the area. He addressed supporters and residents, expressing deep concern over the poor state of development in Lilongwe City Centre.

According to him, the area has suffered many years of neglect, despite its strategic importance as a capital constituency. He pointed out that residents have been deprived of essential services, quality infrastructure, and economic opportunities for far too long.

“Lilongwe City Centre has been left behind for far too long. My mission is to bring real, lasting development that improves everyday lives,” he said while addressing a crowd of party supporters.

Mukhito stated that he is not just making empty campaign promises, but coming forward with a clear vision and practical solutions that will improve the lives of ordinary people.

He revealed plans to focus strongly on youth and women empowerment if elected. According to him, the only way to truly move the community forward is to support business and entrepreneurship among young people and women. He believes that financial independence and economic self-reliance are key tools for breaking the cycle of poverty.

“I will introduce programs that will support local businesses, help youths acquire startup capital, and connect women to opportunities that will allow them to earn income and support their families. Empowerment is the first step to community transformation,” he said.

Mukhito also mentioned the need to revive stalled development projects and push for new infrastructure such as roads, health centres, vocational training institutions, and clean water supply systems. He promised to work closely with government agencies and development partners to attract investment and boost economic activity within the constituency.

He stressed that he would not be a distant or inactive representative, but a hands-on leader who is always close to the people and responsive to their needs.

“I want the people of Lilongwe City Centre to know that they will have a representative who listens to them, fights for them, and works every day to make their lives better,” he said.

The Shadow MP also used the occasion to call on all voters to come out in large numbers during the election and support the DPP for a stronger voice in parliament. He described the upcoming polls as an opportunity to reset the future of the constituency and put it back on the path of growth and progress.

“This election is about the future. It’s about choosing development over stagnation. I’m calling on every voter to rally behind this movement for change. With your support, we will bring progress and dignity back to Lilongwe City Centre,” he said.

Mr. Mukhito’s speech was received with cheers from residents and party members, who praised his plans and expressed optimism that his leadership could bring the change the community has been waiting for.

Some residents who spoke to journalists after the rally shared their frustrations about poor roads, lack of job opportunities, and insecurity in the area. They said they are looking for a representative who will not forget them after the elections but will remain engaged throughout the term.

“We have been voting, but nothing changes. But this time we want someone who will be visible, someone who will bring real projects and not just words. If Mr. Mukhito will do what he says, then he has our full support,” said Grace Nyirenda, a local trader.

As political campaigns gain momentum across the country, all eyes are now on Lilongwe City Centre, where voters are hoping for a shift from promises to action.

Whether Mukhito can turn his vision into reality will depend not just on winning the seat, but on maintaining the political will and partnerships needed to drive sustainable development.
