Peter Obi Says He Has Never Rigged Elections, Vows to Serve Just One Term if Elected

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared that he has never engaged in any form of electoral malpractice throughout his political career.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi stated firmly that his political record is clean and rooted in peace, fairness, and principle. He said, “Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice. I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.”

Obi further claimed that even his political rivals have never faced personal attacks, intimidation, or unfair treatment during contests against him. He said none of them were ever denied their rights or falsely accused, and none were forced to pay heavily just to put out their campaign adverts.

“I believe in fair competition, not manufactured victories,” Obi added.

He made these remarks while reaffirming his earlier pledge that, if elected President of Nigeria, he would serve for only one term of four years. He said the backlash he has received for making that commitment only reflects the public’s doubt in the possibility of honest and effective leadership.

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation. By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months,” Obi said.

Obi denied claims that he is desperate for power, stating that what drives him is not personal ambition but a desire to see Nigeria work. “I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter,” he noted.

He distanced himself from desperate political behaviour, such as switching political positions for popularity, engaging in aggressive rhetoric, or making unrealistic promises. “What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep commitment to see Nigeria work. And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it,” he added.

He believes a focused and transparent administration can use a single term to confront key national issues like corruption, insecurity, and weak institutions.

“In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas. For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure,” Obi said.

He also mentioned that within that same time frame, his administration would ensure that the rule of law is strictly followed and free, fair and credible elections are conducted.

Peter Obi concluded by saying that leadership should not be viewed as an entitlement but as a responsibility to serve. “Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all,” he said.
