Etisalat by e& launches GoWell Consumer health platform

Etisalat UAE, branded as Etisalat by e&, today announced its foray into the consumer digital health space with the launch of ‘GoWell,’ a fitness and wellness platform. ‘GoWell’ is designed to empower subscribers to achieve their health and wellness goals while receiving a series of rewards and cashback incentives.

As people turn to digital solutions to help them manage their health and fitness goals on the go, the launch of ‘GoWell’ for all, including health enthusiasts and change seekers, will allow them to use technology to improve their health outcomes. The launch is also part of Etisalat by e&’s plans to have a 360-degree approach for the eHealth domain starting with fitness and wellness, followed by teleconsultations to be included in the next phase of the platform.

GoWell helps customer assess health through personalised goals by tracking progress syncing all other health devices and apps as well as get rewarded for it.

Telecommunication subscribers in Nigeria hit 214 million

The number of active telecommunication subscribers hit 214.35 million in October, according to new industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

This is the highest number of recorded telecoms subscribers in the nation since the total number of subscribers peaked at 207.58 million in October 2020, months before the SIM-NIN linkage.

On what has driven subscriber growth in 2022, telcos disclosed that more subscribers were getting new SIMs in a bid to circumvent restrictions on SIMs that had not been linked with their National Identification Numbers.

In MTN’s third quarter release, its Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, said, “As a result, the average daily gross connection was 48.1 per cent above the pre-directive level, partly driven by the cohort of subscribers who were initially restricted and opted to register new SIMs.

“Combined with increased usage from the existing base, these have supported an acceleration in the service revenue growth recovery and mitigated the impact of churn on the base.”

The consistent growth witnessed in the number of telecoms subscribers in 2022 aligns with GSMA’s growth prediction for the industry.

According to the global industry’s association, Nigeria has a sizeable number of its population under the age of 18, indicating that its subscriber growth would remain strong for the foreseeable future as more young consumers crossed into adulthood and subscribed to mobile services.

GSMA expects 18 million new Nigerians to become unique telecoms subscribers by 2025. Mobile connectivity is at the core of connectivity in Nigeria, with the majority of online services accessed through mobile channels in the nation.

GSMA believes that mobile connectivity is set to play a crucial role in defining the new normal in the nation. It said, “In 2021, mobile technologies and services generated around 8 per cent of GDP across Sub-Saharan Africa, a contribution that amounted to almost $140bn of economic value added.

“The mobile ecosystem also supported more than 3.2 million jobs (directly and indirectly) and made a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector, with $16bn raised through taxes on the sector. By 2025, mobile’s contribution will grow by $65bn (to almost $155bn), as the countries in the region increasingly benefit from the improvements in productivity and efficiency brought about by the increased take-up of mobile services.”

Despite this growth, about 31.6 million Nigerians live in areas without telecoms coverage, according to the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. The ministry stated that the absence of such coverage had enabled criminal activities and insecurity in these unserved areas.

MTN Ghana to deactivate quarter of it’s subscriber’s SIM cards on Thursday

MTN Ghana, which is Africa’s largest mobile operator’s third-most lucrative market, is bracing for the potential deactivation of a quarter of its subscriber’s SIM cards on Thursday, as it looks to comply with directive from regulators in that country over biometric registration.

The directive from Ghana’s National Communications Authority concerns deactivating those SIM cards that have completed the first stage of a SIM registration process, or linking of their Ghana Card ID to their SIM card, but not the second stage, which concerns biometric capture.

As of November 26, about 22.1 million MTN Ghana subscribers had completed the first stage while 16.4 million had completed the bio-capture phase. This means 5.7 million subscribers would be eligible for deactivation on 1 December. MTN said on Tuesday it was committed to the registration exercise to build an accurate customer database to help minimize fraud in the country.

MTN said it will provide an update on Friday on the effect, including on revenue, of the process, as well as initiatives to re-register subscribers. All deactivated cards can be reactivated within six months, or a deadline of the end of May 2023.

MTN Ghana accounted for just over a tenth, or R9.9 billion, of the mobile operator’s revenue in its half-year to end-June, putting it behind Nigeria and SA. The business has also been dealing with the implications of a new 1.5% levy on electronic money transfer services introduced in May, which has prompted it to cut its transaction fees by a quarter to cushion the blow.

SIM registration rules have also been a headache in Nigeria, with the mobile operator saying in October the rules prompted a 57 000 fall in subscribers in its third quarter to end September, though over a nine-month period, they were still up 10% to 74.1 million.

Active Showmax subscribers surges due to Devilsdorp, Real Housewives and other local shows

Active Showmax subscribers surged to 68% year-on-year, while overall monthly online users increased a pleasing 28% and this was all thanks to local productions such as DevilsDorp, the Real Housewives franchise and The Wife which drew numbers.

Core headline earnings, a measure of sustainable business performance, rose 6% year-on-year to R3.5 billion.

According to Multichoice group financial statement released on Thursday, there was a slight decline in trading profit to R11 billion in South Africa down by 1% as consumers faced pressure from tougher economic conditions.

DStv subscribers in South Africa reached 9 million and “growth rates were subdued” during the financial period up to the end of March and this was attributed to the tough ongoing economic environment and elevated prior year numbers as consumers prioritized video entertainment during the Covid-19-related lockdown

But advertising revenue saw a recovery, alongside a 1% advertising revenue and a 1% increase in subscription revenues, driven by subscriber growth in the mass market and annual price increases as revenue for the SA operations ticked up 4% to R35.6 billion.

The company said “This represents a strong recovery from the 26% decrease reported at the half-year as activities normalized in the second half relative to the prior year and a weaker rand reduced realized losses on foreign exchange contracts”.

As a result of several once-off payments including the payment of the tax security deposits to Nigerian tax authorities in relation to the company’s ongoing tax audit, Group revenue rose 3% to R55.1 billion, while consolidated free cash flow slipped by 3% to R5.5 billion.

In 2021, MultiChoice received a 1.8 trillion naira (~R65 billion) tax bill over unpaid taxes from the Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service

In March, The company managed the situation by announcing that it was appealing the matter and also made a payment of $19.4 million deposit towards the claim and insisted is was not an admission of guilt.

Group subscription revenues increased to R45.3 billion, but a stronger rand resulted in a dip in revenue contribution from the Rest of Africa. A gross dividend of R2.5 billion or R5.65 per share was declared.

CEO Calvo Mawela, said “Reduced losses in the Rest of Africa, a rebound in advertising revenues and a continued focus on cost containment enabled us to absorb the R1.1 billion impact of a normalization in content costs as live sport returned and we resumed our local content production post the Covid-19 lockdowns”.
