5 Maize Flour Brands Declared Unfit for Human Consumption

by Radarr Africa

Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has asked supermarkets and other stockists to remove five brands of maize flour from their shelves for failing to meet quality standards.

According to standards body regulator, Jembe, Dola, Kifaru, Starehe and 210 brands of maize flour products contain high levels of aflatoxin which is above the maximum limit allowed.

As a result, the affected mills have been instructed to stop further manufacture and sale of the blacklisted products until corrective measures on quality is put in place and certified by KEBS.

“Following consistent market surveillance and testing, it has been established that the maize meal brands Jembe, Dola, Kifaru, Starehe and 210 have failed because their levels of aflatoxin is higher than the maximum limit allowed by Kenya Standards,” KEBS stated.

KEBS also suspended the companies’ permits which allowed them to use the standardisation mark on their goods.

Additionally, the manufacturers are required to recall all the substandard maize meal products from the market which have not been seized by KEBS officials.

The new development followed series of market surveillance and reports of safety concerns by the consumers.

Recently, the agency declared seven peanut butter brands over high levels of aflatoxin.
