Rwanda and Mali have signed a significant cooperation agreement, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two African nations. The historic signing took place in Kigali, concluding the first meeting of the Joint Commission between the two countries, which was held from May 25 to May 27, 2024.

The agreement encompasses 19 areas of collaboration, including health, security, culture, agriculture, tourism, and technology. The aim is to bolster cooperation and foster mutual development in these critical sectors.

Dr. Vincent Biruta, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, expressed pride in hosting this landmark meeting. “Rwanda is honoured to host the first Joint Commission meeting with Mali. Our diplomatic relationship has grown stronger since Mali established its embassy in Rwanda in 2017, and this agreement further solidifies our partnership,” he said.

Minister Biruta highlighted that this meeting provided a valuable platform for leaders and business representatives from both countries to explore opportunities for collaboration. “The discussions held during this meeting are pivotal as they lay the groundwork for future cooperation. We are committed to creating avenues for idea exchange, shared experiences, and joint projects,” he added.

Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the shared vision of both countries for a secure and prosperous Africa. “This agreement is a crucial step in enhancing our bilateral relations. It reflects our commitment to a collaborative future where both nations thrive together,” he remarked. “We are determined to ensure that the progress initiated by this agreement continues unabated.”

The agreement stipulates that the Joint Commission members from both countries will work diligently to implement the signed agreements promptly. The Joint Commission, which was established on September 19, 2023, will oversee the status and execution of the cooperation agreements and explore additional areas for partnership.

This cooperation agreement signifies a strengthened alliance between Rwanda and Mali, setting a precedent for future collaborations aimed at mutual growth and development.
