In a move set to reshape South Africa’s digital finance landscape, global card processing giant Paymentology has entered into a strategic partnership with Bank Zero, becoming the bank’s first official alliance partner. The agreement is expected to expand access to modern financial services by providing scalable card-processing infrastructure that supports digital banking and enables wider participation in the country’s financial ecosystem.
Bank Zero, known for its fully digital, branchless model, brings strong local market insight and a mobile-first approach to financial services. Paymentology, with more than two decades of operational experience across African markets, offers global processing capability backed by regulatory compliance and enterprise-grade scale. Together, the two organisations aim to deliver flexible Mastercard card issuing, seamless digital onboarding, and enhanced customer experiences for fintechs, SMEs, retailers, and digital platforms.
Speaking on the collaboration, Kesheni Moodley of Paymentology said the partnership was driven by a shared commitment to solving real customer challenges. “From our earliest conversations, it was clear that both teams were aligned in building infrastructure that prioritises user experience. By combining our global card-processing expertise with Bank Zero’s digital banking strength, and our strong local presence, we are opening new opportunities for businesses to innovate in South Africa’s fast-changing payments space,” she noted.
The partnership comes at a time when digital payment adoption in South Africa is accelerating. Despite being one of Africa’s most advanced financial markets, cash usage remains high. However, recent data shows more than 70 per cent of consumers now use digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, over 60 per cent of physical payments are contactless, and 90 per cent of SMEs accept digital payments. Industry observers say the collaboration is well positioned to tap into these trends, offering more efficient and accessible financial solutions.
Bank Zero’s CEO, Lezanne Human, highlighted the potential impact of the alliance. “South Africa has a robust financial system, yet there is still room to simplify offerings and make them faster and more accessible for both businesses and customers. This partnership with Paymentology opens new possibilities for organisations seeking to participate meaningfully in the digital financial ecosystem,” she said.
With Paymentology’s global processing capabilities integrated into Bank Zero’s modern digital framework, the partnership is poised to unlock new pathways for delivering inclusive, relevant, and innovative financial services across South Africa.
