by Radarr Africa

The Lagos State Government has initiated the Omi Eko project, a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing the state’s waterways and attracting £410 million in investments. The project seeks to enhance water transportation, promote tourism, and improve environmental sustainability within the state.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, highlighted that the Omi Eko project is designed to transform Lagos into a model city with efficient and safe water transportation systems. He emphasized that the initiative would create numerous job opportunities and stimulate economic growth by encouraging private sector participation in the development of the state’s waterways.

The project encompasses the construction of modern jetties, dredging of waterways, and the introduction of state-of-the-art ferries to ensure safe and efficient transportation. Additionally, measures will be implemented to address environmental concerns, such as waste management and shoreline protection, to preserve the aquatic ecosystem.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that the Omi Eko project would alleviate traffic congestion on Lagos roads by providing a viable alternative means of transportation. He called on investors to seize the opportunities presented by the project and collaborate with the state government to achieve its objectives.

Stakeholders in the maritime and tourism sectors have lauded the initiative, noting that it aligns with global best practices and has the potential to position Lagos as a leading city in water transportation and tourism.
