Vitel Wireless Makes History as Nigeria’s First MVNO to Connect With All Major Telecom Networks

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s telecommunications industry has entered a new era with Vitel Wireless, the country’s first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), completing full interconnectivity with all four major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country—MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom (Glo), and 9mobile.

This achievement marks a historic moment, as it is the first time an MVNO has successfully achieved full nationwide interconnectivity in Nigeria. This allows Vitel subscribers to make and receive calls, send SMS, and access data services seamlessly with users across all leading networks in the country.

According to the company’s chairman and CEO, Kenneth Emeka Nwabueze, MFR, the milestone is the result of years of investment in technology, strategic partnerships, and regulatory support. He praised the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for playing a key role in guiding the process.

“We wish to thank the NCC for their timely interventions and policy direction. Their support helped us bring this vision closer to reality,” said Nwabueze.

Vitel Wireless began its pilot phase in May 2025, with full rollout expected to commence in July 2025. The MVNO already provides voice, SMS, and data services across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The company has also received its own dedicated number series—0712, making it the first MVNO in the country to receive a national numbering plan from the NCC. This development sets a new benchmark in the telecom space, positioning the MVNO as a serious competitor in Africa’s largest telecom market.

The full interconnection was made possible through a mix of direct fibre links to certain MNOs and indirect routing via third-party providers such as Wireless Technology Labs (WTL) and Interconnect Clearinghouse Nigeria (ICN). Vitel also collaborated closely with technical teams from the four major telecom operators.

“This is a major step forward for the Nigerian telecom sector,” said Nwabueze. “It shows what is possible for MVNOs in Nigeria, and it creates a path for others to follow.”

Vitel is also making waves in other areas of telecom innovation. It is the first MVNO in Africa to launch a location awareness network, which improves personal safety and enables smart applications for public and private use. The company is focused on offering technology-driven services that combine Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and real-time data analytics.

These technologies are not only intended for individual consumers but are also being adapted for government social welfare programs, healthcare services, and emergency response systems.

Vitel’s entry into the Nigerian market has been widely seen as a game-changer, introducing flexibility, innovation, and customer-first services that were previously unavailable from traditional MNOs.

The company says it will offer affordable data and call packages, along with customised solutions for different user segments, including students, SMEs, government agencies, and rural communities.

“We are not just here to compete; we are here to transform,” Nwabueze added. “We are opening up new opportunities where there used to be none.”

Industry analysts say Vitel Wireless’ successful interconnectivity with all four major operators may encourage other MVNOs to enter the Nigerian market, potentially bringing lower prices, better service, and more innovation for consumers.

With a structured nationwide rollout plan and a bold vision, Vitel is aiming to reshape Nigeria’s telecom landscape, increase digital inclusion, and drive socio-economic development through connectivity.
