Dangote Cement Plant, Obajana, has commenced its 2025 Sustainability Week with a series of exciting activities celebrating sportsmanship, education, and community partnership. Themed “Sustainable Progress: Celebrating Growth and Partnerships,” this year’s event reflects the company’s renewed commitment to inclusive and sustainable community development.

According to a statement from the firm on Wednesday, the annual celebration, which began on October 24, 2025, has been expanded to include a wider range of programmes that promote physical wellness, educational growth, and social engagement among its host communities.

The opening ceremony set a lively tone for the week, bringing together participants from Dangote Cement’s workforce and neighbouring communities. The highlight of the event was a football tournament that showcased teamwork, discipline, and friendship.

The grand finale, held on October 29, 2025, at the Obajana Academy Field, saw the Oyo Community Football Team clinch victory after defeating Dangote Cement Transport 1–0 in a thrilling match. The competition featured several exciting games between teams representing the Obajana Plant, Dangote Transport, and surrounding communities.

The football event was designed not only as a recreational activity but also as a bridge between the company and its host communities—encouraging unity, cooperation, and shared pride.

Senior management members, including Plant Director, Mr. Azad Nawabuddin; CGM Maintenance, Mr. Panjala Sreedar; CGM Production, Mr. John Gwong; and GM Special Duties, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, attended the final match. The crowd applauded the players and organisers for promoting Dangote Cement’s enduring values of collaboration, inclusion, and social responsibility.

In addition to sports, the company organised an Inter-School Spelling Bee and Quiz Competition, which drew participation from ten secondary schools within the host communities. The competition provided young learners with a platform to display their knowledge and creativity, while fostering healthy academic competition.

After several rounds of intense spelling and quiz sessions, Golden Vessels Academy, Obajana, emerged as the Spelling Bee champion. The event underscored Dangote Cement’s commitment to education, youth empowerment, and intellectual development across its communities.

Speaking during the launch of the Sustainability Week, Plant Director, Mr. Azad Nawabuddin, said the company’s investment in community sports and education reflects its belief in holistic development.

“Our investment in sports infrastructure and programmes is part of our commitment to the total well-being of our communities,” Nawabuddin said. “The football tournament goes beyond entertainment—it builds character, teaches discipline, and strengthens the bond between our organisation and the people we serve. These relationships, developed on the field, translate into stronger partnerships across all our community initiatives.”

Head of HAM-Admin/HR, Mr. Peter Agba, also highlighted the importance of combining physical and intellectual development as part of the company’s sustainability vision.

“Our focus on sports and education is a deliberate strategy to nurture both body and mind,” Agba said. “By engaging youths through football and academic contests, we are laying the foundation for long-term growth and empowerment within our communities.”

This year’s Sustainability Week will also feature environmental awareness programmes, health outreach campaigns, and vocational skills development workshops, demonstrating Dangote Cement’s evolving approach to sustainability. The company aims to connect physical health, education, and environmental stewardship into a single framework that supports long-term development.

Dangote Cement reaffirmed that its community empowerment drive will continue throughout the year through quarterly sporting activities, educational support initiatives, and collaborative community projects. The company said the week-long celebration is not just an event but part of a broader effort to foster unity, innovation, and social progress.

As the activities continue, Dangote Cement Obajana remains committed to driving meaningful change through responsible corporate citizenship. By combining sports, education, and sustainable development, the company is strengthening its role as a catalyst for growth in its host communities and beyond.
