Wema Bank has once again asserted its dominance in the Nigerian banking sector’s sporting arena after emerging overall champion at the Nigeria Bankers Game (NBG) 2025 Grand Finale, marking the institution’s fourth consecutive overall victory. The bank announced the achievement in a statement issued on Tuesday, describing the triumph as a milestone that reflects its long-standing culture of excellence.
This year’s tournament ended on a high note for Wema Bank as its athletes secured nine gold medals across different sporting categories. The bank excelled in table tennis—winning the female singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles—and also clinched top prizes in volleyball, scrabble, video games, the women’s 100m sprint, 200m race, and the 4x100m women relay.
Beyond the team performance, the 2025 edition also celebrated standout individual achievements. Oluwaseun Adewunmi, a staff member of Wema Bank, was crowned the Overall Outstanding Athlete of the Nigeria Bankers Game 2025. Her impressive participation across multiple events earned praise from organisers, who described her performance as a reflection of discipline, resilience, and exceptional commitment.
Speaking on the victory, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, said the win was a significant achievement, especially as the bank marks 80 years of service and contribution to national development.
“Wema Bank Plc has once again won the Nigerian Bankers Games title for the fourth consecutive year,” Oseni said.
“This remarkable feat sets a new benchmark in the Nigerian banking industry. As we commemorate 80 years of impact and service, this victory carries even deeper meaning for us as an institution.
“We owe this incredible success to every staff member who wore our colours and competed with passion, focus, and grit. Our esteemed athletes, you are true champions. Your dedication to training and your stellar performance showcased the absolute best of our institution. Thank you for making history.”
Oseni added that the victory goes beyond winning medals. According to him, it reflects the strength of Wema Bank’s corporate culture and its consistent drive for excellence.
“This championship confirms that Wema Bank is a powerhouse, a place where excellence is not the exception but the standard. This victory is more than just a trophy. It is a profound reflection of our corporate DNA and a powerful testament to the spirit of excellence and determination that defines us,” he said.
Reacting to her recognition as the outstanding athlete of the tournament, Adewunmi expressed appreciation to the bank and her colleagues.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this award. Competing across several events and representing Wema Bank has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. This achievement is a shared victory that belongs to my teammates and everyone who supported us throughout the tournament,” she said.
“I am grateful to Wema Bank for providing the platform, encouragement, and support that enabled us to perform at our very best.”
Wema Bank said its fourth straight victory reinforces its commitment to nurturing talent, promoting teamwork, and building a workforce driven by a culture of resilience and shared success. The bank noted that its consistent performance at the annual games demonstrates a deliberate effort to encourage employee wellness, collaboration, and innovation.
“This historic achievement is not only a reflection of sporting success but also a testament to Wema Bank’s unwavering dedication to fostering a culture of resilience, innovation, and collaboration. Through consistent performance, empowerment of its people, and a drive to set new standards, Wema Bank continues to lead as a trailblazer, inspiring others to strive for greatness,” the bank stated.
The Nigeria Bankers Game is an annual multi-sports competition that brings together employees from banks across the country to promote unity, physical fitness, friendly rivalry, and industry networking. Over the years, the event has expanded in scope, with growing participation and heightened competitiveness among financial institutions.
As Wema Bank celebrates another victory, the bank says its attention will remain on continuous improvement—both on and off the field—as it aims to sustain its leadership role in the Nigerian banking space.
