Ethio Telecom Partners with Huawei to Launch Mobile Money

Huawei, the leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices, powers the first telecom mobile money platform in Ethiopia for Ethio Telecom.

Telebirr mobile money service delivered by Huawei allows Ethio Telecom customers to make simple, efficient, and secure money transfer as well as daily payments.

Huawei Mobile Money platform deployed currently have the capacity of processing up to 100 transactions per second (TPS) and can be easily scaled up to 1000 TPS in the future.

The service is accessible with SMS, USSD and smartphone applications and it can scale up to more functions in the future.

Huawei delivered the end-to-end solution for Ethio Telecom within five months by constructing the datacenter, configuring hardware and software, benchmarking top global telecom project delivery efficiency.

Ethio Telecom’s CEO on the launch event said ‘I would like to thank our partner Huawei for finishing this project in such short time.”

Huawei Mobile Money has been commercially deployed in 19 countries, serving over 152 million users which represent 22% of registered Emerging markets Mobile Money accounts. In Kenya Huawei, Mobile Money served more than 29 million customers using their M-Pesa service with transactions worth $66 Billion.

Huawei also deployed mobile money services to Ghana, Lesotho, Tanzania, and DR Congo.
