Ghana’s electric power problems have been one of top toughest problems that governments over the years have been tackling but to no avail. This problem has generated a lot of political games and promises in the past. But it seems something is going to happen that will resolve almost all the power in Ghana.
In the quest to overcome the power problems in the country, the government has initiated the use of nuclear energy to rectify the inadequate and high cost of generating electricity.
Speaking in an interview, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Kwaku Afriyie has said that there have been adequate plans to start nuclear power in Ghana.
According to Dr. Afriyie, the country is ready and well prepared to implement Nuclear Power following efforts put together by stakeholders in the nuclear energy sector.
Dr. Afriyie said at the opening ceremony of the 2021 African Renaissance Day celebration on June 28 said that Ghana is not an alien to nuclear power.
“Nuclear energy is not new to Ghana. The theme for this year’s celebration, “Ghana readiness for Nuclear Power, best fits our contemporary energy discourse at this stage of our nuclear journey. Major factors influencing Ghana’s development plan with emphasis on, increasing demand for electricity and limited hydro as well as gas resources, need for the diversification of energy source to make Ghana’s energy portfolio much more resilient, climate change mitigation and industrialization (economic diversification and transformation),” he said.
In stating the time that it will be rolled out, Dr. Afriyie encourages the country the by 2029 the country will have its first-ever nuclear power.
“We should expect that education is going to come to the fore now that we are fairly ready and we have finished phase one and the steps that we have to take. You just heard that by 2029 we should have our first nuclear plant in place,” he stated.
