MAGLA Donates K20 Million to NPL Mothers' Fun Run 2025

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has donated K20 million towards this year’s Nation Publications Limited (NPL) Mothers’ Fun Run, which is scheduled to take place in October 2025. Originally, MAGLA had planned to contribute K15 million to the cause, but after learning that the initiative is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Authority decided to increase their donation to K20 million. The announcement was made at a special event held at the venue on Wednesday.

Racheal Mijiga, the Director General of MAGLA, praised the NPL Mothers’ Fun Run for its crucial role in promoting safe motherhood and improving maternal health in the country. “We have seen significant improvements in both infant mortality and maternal deaths. Mothers are the backbone of society, and children’s early development is critical. It is therefore important for individuals and companies to contribute towards safe motherhood for the sustainability of Malawi,” she remarked.

Mijiga’s words reflect the growing awareness and support for maternal health initiatives in Malawi, particularly in a time when the country continues to work towards reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. MAGLA’s donation is part of its broader commitment to health and social well-being, demonstrating the organization’s role in fostering positive change within communities.

Aubrey Mchulu, the Editor of NPL, expressed his gratitude for MAGLA’s consistent support over the years. He emphasized the significant impact MAGLA’s donations have had on the success of the initiative. “We are very thankful for this donation. MAGLA has been a consistent partner, and this will go a long way in helping us move closer to achieving zero maternal deaths in the country,” Mchulu said.

The NPL Mothers’ Fun Run, now in its 20th year, has been instrumental in raising funds and awareness to improve maternal health care across Malawi. Over the years, the initiative has supported several district hospitals and health facilities by providing essential maternal and neonatal care equipment. This year, the funds raised will specifically support the Kasungu District Health Office and 25 satellite facilities within the district.

The donation will be used to procure much-needed medical equipment, including delivery beds, oxygen concentrators, suction machines, and other essential maternity supplies. These resources are critical in improving the quality of care for expectant mothers and newborns, especially in rural areas where access to medical facilities can be limited.

The NPL Mothers’ Fun Run has grown into a key annual event that not only raises funds but also educates the public on the importance of safe motherhood and maternal health. The continued support from organizations like MAGLA helps ensure that these efforts reach communities in need, contributing to the wider goal of reducing maternal and infant mortality in Malawi.
