Senegalese parliament vote postpones presidential election to December

The Senegalese presidential election has been postponed to December 15th this year after a bill was adopted by the parliament on Monday.

The bill, proposed by deputies from the ruling Benno Bokk Yakaar coalition and the main opposition Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), received majority support. The postponement came after the rejection of PDS candidate Karim Wade’s dual nationality by the Constitutional Council. Additionally, PDS deputies raised allegations of corruption and conflicts of interest against two members of the Constitutional Council, leading to the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry.

President Macky Sall had announced the postponement of the election from its original date of February 25th in a national broadcast message on Saturday, just before the start of the electoral campaign, without specifying a new date.

The Constitutional Council has cleared twenty candidates to participate in the upcoming polls, and Sall has confirmed that he will not seek a third term.
