SpaceX launches a new iteration of Starlink internet service for moving vehicles

SpaceX has launched a new iteration of its Starlink satellite Internet service, which lets users access the service from a land-based vehicle in motion.

Starlink for RVs has provided a portable version of the fixed home and business service for several months.

However, it uses the same dish that requires placement in a stationary position to provide connectivity.

With the new Flat High Performance Starlink unit, users can use the Starlink network while on the move.

“With a wide field of view and enhanced GPS capabilities, the Flat High Performance Starlink can connect to more satellites, allowing for consistent connectivity on the go,” Starlink explained.

“The hardware is designed for a permanent installation on your vehicle and is resilient in harsh environments.”

The service costs $135 in the US, $25 more than the standard Starlink subscription. That is the same price as the standard portable option that offers no in-motion access.

However, Starlink is giving users who order the new version preferential “immediate” access to the kit. Those who opt for the standard portable package are placed on a waiting list.

That comes with the caveat that in-motion users are deprioritised in congested areas and during peak hours.

“Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of the service are not guaranteed,” SpaceX explained on its Help page.

The in-motion use option is available for order and use in select markets, SpaceX said.

Starlink provides a coverage map specifically for the in-motion feature to show which areas have low capacity for in-motion users.

Aside from the two types of RV service, Starlink is available as a fixed service for homes and businesses, and a mobile service for boats and airplanes.
