Uganda Manufactures Africa’s First Electric City Bus

For countries to meet their transport emissions reduction target, most cities are setting up transport strategies like electric mobility and most importantly electric buses for their public transport network, these choices are part of cities effort to improve air quality in urban spaces, not only to take part in the global effort to combat climate change but also to make cities healthier for commuters and the environment enabling for residents.

A journey to Kampala, the capital of Uganda, one of the busiest and populated city one will be faced with the constant fumes emanating from conventional buses carrying passengers to different destination.

To meet the transport emission reduction target, Kiira Motors Corporation in Uganda has championed the development of a domestic automotive fleet system by manufacturing Africa’s first electric city bus.

To further address the mobility challenges in Uganda which range from congestion, transport carbon emissions, climate changes to creating a permanent solution to mass mobility in Uganda.

The electric city bus is designed and powered with 3000 battery charge life with a capacity to convey 90 passengers safely to their destination, represent an innovative urban vehicle that is key to enable fleet upscale, meet the increasing needs of commuters use of public transport and boost the overall city’s image.

According to the World Health Organisation, about 91 per cent of the world’s population breathes in toxic air which causes 4.2 million premature deaths every year.

Low -carbon rate that reduces our dependence on fossil fuels is an important way to tackle health-related impacts and save our planet.

African nations should consider deploying the use of electric buses as part of a zero-emission mobility strategy, and not the only solution but to upgrade its fleet to fully electric mobility network to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5ºC and reduce the health impacts of air pollution.
